Ball joints http://personal.utulsa.edu/~nathan-b...28balljoin.pdf (often cause the tire to wear on one side due to excess camber when ball joint breaks), shocks (I'm told that causes "cupping" in the tread), alignment (but probably wouldn't produce a rattle.

I just tracked down a rattle to the sway-bar (stabilizer bar) attachment, but I doubt that would cause tire wear.

Wheel bearings will give you a rattle too. Jack that wheel off the ground and grab it a 12 and 6 and see if you get any play. Also put a bar under the wheel and lift up while somebody else watches the balljoint for movement.

Do you notice the rattle in the steering wheel? Making turns left or right more so? On the brakes or in the brake pedal?
