hey guys so today i noticed a very distinct sound coming from my front suspension when going over the speed bumps in my neighborhood, so i checked around to see what i could find..... well i found that the front passenger side upper shock mount had completely broke off and the shock is dangling from the bottom mount....

is this a replaceable part that toyota makes? i searched and the only alternative i found was shock hoops but keep in mind this is an all stock 4runner that is only driven on the street. i know i will need to weld in the replacement part but what is my best bet? i dont have any metal experience so i either will have to pay someone to weld it up for me or buy a welder and learn haha

also i have to drive tomorrow back home which is about 60 miles away (im away at school) would it be ok if i just unbolt the shock and drive without it? i think it would be better to unbolt it than leave it dangling from the bottom mount possibly stressing it.

anyone have any clue about the parts? i did find someone to weld it up so thats not an issue anymore

If it was me I would unbolt the shock.


The shock mount is part of the frame. I highly doubt you will find a replacement. You can fabricate a new one out of steel. But since you aren't good with metal/no experience. Id take the old piece with you and tell the person to weld it back on or make something for you. Or bug those shock hoops you saw.

i would bet you can buy the shock mount.

I know I have bought different ones over the years.

Make friends with your local parts guys

Might be a big help to tell us what year it is.

If the mount broke the bolt must have been loose for quite some time.

False alarm guys I had someone else look at it and turns out the mount never broke, the shock just popped out from the mount and everything was fine. I popped the shock back in and everything is all good! Thanks anyways guys I was stressed a lot from school and needed another set of eyes haha

How does a shock pop out of the mount? Should be a stud with nut on top.

I have no clue but it's possible, I'm assuming the nut that holds it in either backed out or was somehow broke? And once the nut backed out the shock moved around freely until it popped out on a speed bump which I drive over several near my house.... Didn't know it was possible for a shock to do that either that's why I automatically assumed broken shock mount
