Sorry for the late reply. My problem was inside the spindle, there is a brass bushings where the CV axle goes trough. If it is not greased up, it will start spinning in its socket when engaging 4x4.

My noise got fixed up when I pulled the CV out an greased up the shaft and the face that lays against the spindle.

Hope this helps!

I know this threads old but need help

This exact same noise just happened to me, I'm about 65 miles away from home, all freeway, am I safe to drive home or am I going to have to pay for a tow? It's slowly getting louder, and sporadically goes away after hitting a bump or something.

Wink

I imagine you made it home by now...but that noise was due to the CV axle spinning the hub bushing. So no 4x4 and no locked hubs should equal to no noise....Assuming it was the same problem i had. Based on your description of hitting bumps and the sound gone, it sounds spot on the issue.
I would not mess too much with 4x4 untill you fix the issue.
