Front end clunk
hey all, so I am sick of tired of a clunk coming from my front end. It is only noticeable when I am in 4 wheel drive and going under 10mph. I was thinking the u joints, but the drive shaft does not have any play. It engages into 4 wheel drive perfectly and makes no noise when in 2. Any ideas?

hubs or cv axles is my guess. Maybe the diff mounts. Does it only do it when turning? cus i got the normal "hop" from the front if i try to turn too sharp when in 4wd.

hmm..could it be your birfs??....i know it's not cv axles since you've done and SAS..LOL..and it's not the diff mounts..cuz he has none..unless you count the spring hangers LOL
hm..i would say MAKE SURE your U-joints are good lol
other than that..maayybbee wheel bearings?..

if it were wheel bearing dont you think it would clunk while in 2 wheel drive as well? What is the fool proof way to check u joints? I crawled under and still did not feel any play, should I jack the front end up to take the weight off it or something?

Because it only happens in 4wd that should limit it to hubs, shafts, differential, drive shaft, transfer case. I would first check the birf and hub, then move on to the differential. If you have a square drive shaft in the front it will clunk, not sure if you bought or built the truck.

the driveshaft is not square, I had 6 states distributing make it, it is the double cardigan set up. will engaging 4 wheel drive with out locking the hubs help determine if thats the problem or not? Just an idea.

engaging 4wd will still turn the drive shaft, differential and axle shafts. If you do this and there is no clunk it would point to the hubs. If it still clunks I would guess a birf. Can you tell if it is coming from the right or the left?

it is coming from the center, after further inspection ( hanging out the door while my friend drives) I think that I have a broken transfer case mount. Is there a write up any where on throwing a new mount on? And where is the best place to get one?
thanks

what do you mean by pinion preload? I am fairly sure part of the problem is broken transfer case mounts, you could physically see the transfer case move

It is pretty straight forward to change. Just make sure you support the transmission.
Here is a couple links for HD mounts
