Front Differential oil seal replacement
Hello yotatech!
Every time I go 'froadin I break something.
Last time we went I busted my oil seal on the front right (passenger) on the differential where the cv goes into the diff.
It seems like people call this different things - front axle seal or differential side seal - the fsm calls it seal, oil. I've searched and only found partial info.
The part number is 90311-35032
I've looked at the fsm and I cannot figure out what the heck I'm looking at. Does anyone have simple instructions on how I can replace this without all the SST tools?

Its actually alot easier to do than the exploded view leads on.
After you get the inspection plate off you can pop the snap ring off and pull the half shaft out. Then you can pry the old seal out (Taking great care to not mar the sealing surface) and tap the new seal in using a large round object the same size as the seal (Like a big socket, or piece of pipe) just use lots of greese, and make sure it goes in straight!

Is the access panel the same as the diff cover? I pulled the fsm diagram from my 95 fsm because I don't have the 86. I don't think mine has the snap ring piece, at least it wasn't on the parts diagram I got from the toyota dealership diagram.

Yeah, sorry for the confusion. The plate that comes off the front of the diff to allow you to see inside is the inspection plate that I was talking about.
I'm pretty sure there is a snap ring on the inner side, either way you have to pull it off to look at it, if you can pull the diff out that might make it a little less awkward, and easier to see what your doing. Bench jobs > laying under a truck jobs.

The guys on this thread years ago didn't know what they were talking about.
It is not necessary to open the differential cover to pull the axle stub and service this seal.
The axle stub may be popped out simply by prying between it and the differential housing with large screwdrivers, tire irons, or similar.
When the axle stub is in your hand, you will see the captive snap ring on the inside end of it.
