I recently installed the bj spacer on my truck and discovered in the process that i some how pulled the side gear shaft out of the tube about an inch and a half. What i need to know is do i just slide this back in place or did i break something that held the cv joint flange inside of the tube. I can add pictures if some needs to know what i am talking about. It is held in place with a c-clip near the end of the half-shaft. You should be able to carefully tap it back in. If it gives you alot of resistance, you might need a new c-clip (like $0.90 from Toyota)

so if we are able to tap it in then dont worry about it or take the diff cover off and replace the c clip. Also is it fine to drive like this and without the c clip. I have man locking hubs so it should be alright.

Ok so me and my dad just spent 20 min trying to beat the shaft back in and to no avail so anyone have any other suggestions as to what it may take to get this thing back into its seat? I still cannot figure out how i pulled this thing out. and now it will not go back in

Pop the pumpkin. Take it all the way out make sure everything is straight and there are no burrs or ridges on the shaft. Reassemble. Its not a long or involved job.

OK so i still have not gotten the half shaft back into the tube. I am really aggravated at this point. Have i messed something up by unknowingly placing my truck into 4wd without knowing the shaft had come out. Also if i pull the differential cover off what am i looking for. Is the Detroit truetrac making this difficult to line up or have i messed something up already and thats why it has not gone back in. If anyone has any personal experience with this please either comment or PM me. I am very close to having to take this thing to a shop which i do not want to do so any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Clint

No that is just the cv joints. I need info on the actual axle that slides into the long side of the axle housing. If you look in my pictures above you can see what has pulled out.

That looks like a non-ADD setup you have there. If that's the case, the info you need is here.. However, it's already been posted above. There is a snap ring that helps hold the side gear shaft in. Remove the side gear shaft completely, and inspect the snap ring and the splines on the shaft. If everything is in good shape, slide it back in, making sure the splines line up (by feel) When all is lined up, you should be able to tap the shaft back into place.
