front axle help
my front axle leaks on my 86.. i was wondering how the front axel works? when im not in 4 wheel drive dose the gears in the axle still move or dose the hubs move freely? in other word am i safe for now? or is it like a rear end having to fix the problem asap?

Could we please have some clarification? Since you have an '86 and didn't mention SAS, I'm going to guess you have IFS.
When you say the front axle leaks, I'm guessing you mean the front differential. Is that correct? Now we need to know if you have drive flanges or manual hubs.
Please Google anything I said if you aren't familiar with the terminology.

sorry i didn't know there were more then 1 style front axle.. i have the front axle with independent suspension with cv axles. i have to manually lock the hubs. i don't think the main 10 bolt cover is leaking, it looks like its coming from where the passenger cv connects to the differential. im always under my truck and i never noticed it and i put it in 4 lo couple of weeks ago for the first time and crawled a ditch just the learn how 4wheel drive works. i had no problems. i did a oil change recently and i had alittle too much oil so i went under the truck to drain a little bit and thats when i noticed my axle was wet with fluid. i was just asking if the gears in the front differential moves when im in 2wd. i know rear differentials will go out within a couple of blocks with no fluid. if the the front gears dont move when im in 2wd i should be safe? untill i can get it serviced. im still a yota noob. sorry guys

In 2wd the front driveshaft is not driven. With the hubs unlocked and in 2wd, the front shaft, diff and CVs do not spin.
The ADD hubs do something else stupid I never bother to remember. One or both CVs spin or something.
You can degrease and dry your differential, and then check soon after to see where it's leaking from but before it's leaked enough to obscure the source.
