The 3.0s are known for burnt exhaust valves, causing compression in that cylinder to drop. Doesn't hurt to spec the exhaust valves a little on the loose side. The crossover has a purpose but the placement could be better, like under the transmission. Good to hear your getting it back together.

That's not a valve grind; it's what we used to call valve "lapping." Even Click & Clack refer to that as a "rite of passage" that is otherwise useless. A valve grind re-establishes the correct profile on the valve and the seat. Lapping, at best, just conforms the badly-shaped valve and seat to each other. Sorta.

But if you're running well now, that's what counts.
