First valve adjustment, a little nervous
Ok I've got the paper work, the tools, the time and I've read everything I can find on doing a valve adjustment on a 22re. I'm a little nervous though, anything I should look out for?
And in a new development the motor has started to push coolant into the overflow when it warms up. Head gasket???
*laugh* If this keeps up I'll end up rebuilding the whole dang thing in frame.

About the coolant, I'm no expert but I think it's normal to eject coolant into the res when it's warmed up...thats why you fill it up 1/4 of the way when it's cold, to leave room for when it's warm.

Don't worry. You'll see..... it's real easy. Probably one of the easiest and greatest tune ups you can do for your truck.

Coolant spilling into the overflow is normal. Remember, when the coolant gets hot, it expands. The port for the overflow tube is at the top of the radiator filler neck...so when the coolant heats up, it rises in the radiator, and flows into the tube that leads to the overflow bottle.
When the engine cools, the coolant contracts and the level in the radiator lowers causing suction on that tube which then pulls that coolant from the overflow back into the radiator to keep it full.

Do it warm!
A little trick with the feeler gauge:
Put it in at the right setting and wiggle it in and out a bit, while tightening the adjuster until you lock the gauge in place. then just back the adjuster off just enough to slide the gauge out. that gets the settings right.
I like to spin the engine over a couple times when im done (by hand), and recheck em all.
Once you've done it a couple times you'll be able to do it really fast. The hardest part it dealing with all the vacuum lines to get the valve cover off.
