First Gen need ideas...

just purchased an 87 4runner and i need a little advice from the wise old owls of the toyota world to assist me.

So the plans are for bigger tires, bigger lift, and more power.

From what I have read the street RV head witht the 268/Torkr cam from engnbldr seems to be a pretty good set up. Adding to that a Thorley header and cold air kit it should make enough power to turn those big tires??

The short block needs to be rebuilt but the transmission looks to be in working order. Should I work on the tranny now or just drive it till it breaks??

What is it? A 5spd or auto? 22re, I assume. Hope you plan on regearing with those big tires.

Turn up torsion bars, beat some seams, blocks/shackles/Add-a-leaf, bigger leaf pack, coil-over-leaf (new type of thing. verra cheap), airbox removal, aftermarket intake (if you want), exhast (stock manifold is just dandy, but do what ya gotta do), heavy duty clutch, regear the diffs, lockers, and thats bout all I can think of without goin too crazy or expensive. Regearin is the most expensive outta that list of things, but definitely most effective.

But heck, just do it to it!

yeah its a 22re and its a 5spd

and when regearing what would be a good ratio

33's 4.88s are most popular. 35's 5.29s or 5.71s. I got 33x12.5x15, locked rear, and can break em loose with my 22re 5spd w/ 4.88s...

alright well i do more on-road then off-road so it seems like 4.88's would be enough. and the best place to buy....

also does anyone know about the upgraded throttle body from LC engineering?? i dont want to do exhaust and then cam and head and be held up by not getting enough airflow....

and for that matter how well does the intake flow on the 22re??

Oh yeah, 4.88s are just dandy with 33s. 75mph @ 3000rpm or so.

Stock air intake is dang good. Only reason I replaced mine with a K&N was because I seriously mangled the stock one, and someone had given it to me for free a couple months earlier. And I guess you caint wash and reuse the stock one like a k&n right? I forget...

LC and Enginebldr are thought of pretty highly round here. Don't think you'll go wrong with either.

What are your objectives in doing the lift? Is it aesthetics? You don't need a lift for 33's. Be aware that your gas mileage will go down the drain when you do these mods. 33's weigh about twice what 235s do, so every time you change speed, start or stop, you have to overcome all of that inertia. For functionality, you'd do better to lock, T/C gears, and maybe diff gears than a lift & head, IMO.

yeah pretty much for looks im not a big time off-roader but enjoy some time in the mud
