First 22re, very high idle.

Well I just got my first 22re equiped truck (its a 90 4x4) and it has a really high idle, Its almost like it never comes out of closed loop or its cold cycle but even then it really seems to idle high. When i first start it it goes to 2000 and hangs out there for a few minutes and then it drops to about 1500 and thats where it stays. I know its not just the idel screw becuase I cranked that all the way in and it still idled around 1200 rpms. Any suggestions before I check all the vacuum lines? I also noticed that the valve cover is leaking from the gasket, could that be it?

Thanks

Andy

if ur thermostat is stuck open it will not allow the truck to warm up, so the choke mode stays in and this results in a high idle

Does it drop back to normal after you drive it around for a bit?
I have been messing around with my idle lately and it likes to be warmed up for about 15 minutes or go for a little drive first for it to idle back at 750ish.

I'd check the linkage and cables just to make sure nothing is binding or stuck. Maybe someone messed with the linkage adjustment at some point. (the screw that opens the throttle, not the screw for the dash pot) It's possible your timing is very advanced. Other than the high idle how is the truck running? The valve cover leaking shouldn't have anything to do with it.

Carb or EFI?
If carb check the timing. Set to 0. Check the F.I cam (opener and TVS).

If EFI, set the timing to 5 BTDC The throttle body might have a fast idle built into it or an air valve on the outside. The air valve hose can be pinched off. The T/B type can be checked with a piece of tape stuck over the hole in the barrel and hooking the goosneck back up so it will start. The adjuster screw has an O-ring on it IIRC. Check there too.

Let me know what you find. Im trying to figure out if it is mechanical or electrical.

Well thanks for the replys. I checked the timing and it was about 8-10 btdc so I set it to 5 and the truck almost died. The idle went to 5-700 but not smoothly at all. So I put it back to 8. It has come down a bit with a tune up that I performed but the idle still hangs for about 1 second whenever I shift gears and then drops down again and is generally high no matter what (about 1200). Could there be something Im missing? Thanks

Anyone else have a hanging idle? My 3.0 idle drops right down after I push in teh clutch but this one hangs for just a second. Any thoughts?

was your idle adjust screw all the way down when you set the timing to 5 btdc?

Ya know, this just started happening to my 22RE the other day too. I took it wheeling in my backyard(nothing too tough) and then parked it. The next day i started it and the high idle is always there...i havent tried anything yet tho.
