FIRE!!! / PS Pressure hose

So someone will forsure enjoy this. and maybe help.

So my battery hold-down clamp came off the other day and hit the positive terminal on the battery, so it was grounding right to the frame, running a significant amount of current through the entire truck for approximately 2 minutes. Full current was running through the steel P/S Pressure hose, boiling the fluid and causing it to smoke and almost cause a fire, like I had to call the fire dept.

The ground wire to the computer was burned completely. After replacing it I can't seem to find any electrical deficiencies.

The P/S Pressure Hose is cooked and i'm having a significant amount of trouble removing the nut that attaches it to the steering box, it is pretty siezed on. I can't seem to get an aftermarket hose here in canada easily, so I'm going to have a hydraulic shop make one.

Questions:

1. Any tips on removing the nut, or even accessing it?

2. What else electrical do you guys think could be damaged?

3. How bad for the box would it be to make a loop with the power steering box, and drive it in manual steering mode?

Thanks for any help guys, especially #3 as I need to drive this thing in the next few days.

why not just take the belt off the power steering pump?

I did something kinda similar, I hooked up a battery backwards (but only for few seconds). I had to replace four fuses and the truck worked like new. Without the HAM radio it would only have been three fuses.

Nice, belt is already removed and so is the broken Pressure hose. So no one sees an issue driving it as long as it has some fluid in it. Thanks guys

For anyone's future reference. I cut off the high pressure hose leaving about an inch out of the box, took a small piece of hose and just connected the in to the out on the gearbox, and it drives just like it would with manual steering. good enough till I can get the pieces I need.

thanks guys, yotatech rules.

That's what I was going to recommend river, that was plan c after I couldn't get mine off. Plan B was to remove the gearbox WITH the pressure line still attached (disconnected them on the ABS side) and get a wrench and a hammer on it for the impact effect.

Flare nut wrenches are your friend, a regular open face won't grip the bolt enough

Spray on some time of penetrant like PB Blaster and let it sit on the bolt for a bit before you try to loosen it. I purchased a Gates brand P/S high pressure line for $30 on the net, I'm sure you could get one too.
