Finished timing chain, won't start.

So I finally finished my timing chain job today. I had set the motor to TDC, and the distributor to the 1st plug. (Approximately 11oclock). When I tried to start it up today, it just chugged and is turned. Very slow, jerky turns. Is it just still out of timing? Do I have anything mixed? I did check to make sure the plugs are to their correct cylinder. About the only thinf I haven't done Is a compression check to make sure I didn't bend a valve.

Ps. This is on an 86 22re 4runner.

I'm with Plug on this one. Make sure the shiny links line up with the dimple in the sprocket.

Did you set it then turn it over by hand two revolutions - 720* then recheck it and made sure the guides all lined up? Is the battery fully charged? Sounds stupid I know but may be the reason for the luggish start

You said that you were at TDC when you changed the chain. Were you at TDC on the Compression stroke (both valves closed on #1) or were you TDC on the Exhaust stroke?
Did you make note of the distributor position when you removed it? Was the rotor pointing to #1 on the cap (11 o'clock) when you removed it?
That chugging sounds like your engine is firing with the exhaust valve open.

Thanks for the quick responses. I know the silver links were on the dimples and I did rotate the engine twice. As for which stroke TDC, that was actually one of my first thoughts. The battery is also a thought, as its been sitting for 5 months. I guess it would be wise to check what position the distributor should be pointing for TDC, I swear I looked.it up and it said plug one on the cap.

Also, I still have to consider worst case scenario that I bent a valve. So a compression test is still on order.

the only way you would of bent a valve is if the timing chain was off, as long as youre sure it was done right you should be ok, but it cant hurt to check.

My other thought is the dizzy is off, when i re did mine i had a hell of a time getting it timed right. I had done the same thing as you, pulled it out and didnt move it. But, it didnt work, lol. I ended up putting it on TDC and lining the dizzy up the best i could with #1 cylinder, it took a bit of pulling it out and moving a tooth, but i finally got it.

Sorry I forgot to mention, my truck had had fallen out of timing due to the drivers side chain guide breaking and falling apart into my oil pan. Basically, it was running fine, I stopped to get gas. When I tried to start it back up, it wouldn't start, and when it did it ran like ˟˟˟˟. I towed it home.

My dad is trying a fresh battery today while im working, and ill try the basics as far as checking for spark and fuel, and take a look at the distributor again.

After 3 months of sitting with a fresh timing set, she fired up yesterday. Apparently, I was a few teeth off on the distributor, so spark was firing no where near a contact. (Literally between 1 and 3). I'm still off a little, but she turns and idles great. Just gotta get a timing light and its GTG.

don't bother with the light- get the chain lined up right first.
you don't have enough adjustment in the distributor to compensate for 1 tooth on the chain.

Uhhh... The chain is lined up lol. Not sure why everyone was suggesting that now that i go back and read. But I guess my description was really poor. A more accurate way i would describe what it sounded like was a dry chugging with no attempt at spark.

FFFUUUUUUUU.....

Great news, my trucks runs awesome. Bad news, For some reason, my brand new oil seal (Crank seal, whatever you want to call it) is not sealing very well. Whiles its not losing a signifigant amount of oil, it sure is slinging a freaking mess under the engine. Going to take off the crank pully on Thursday and see whats up.
