finished 3.0 head gasket how many cranks to start?
Just finished the head gasket job, major PITA.Im pretty certain(nagging doubt) I have all vacuum lines, electrical connections, fuel lines, etc.hooked up properly. It took me 7 days solo, bagging and tagging everything plus pics and video documentation. But my battery sat on the ground the whole time which I think drained it and I just went to finally turn the key and it turned over very weakly for like three seconds then the battery quit.I have it charging now, does the battery have to have full strength to start or should it have started on the first crank? After doing such a tear down rebuild does it take a couple of seconds for everything to come to life, like the fuel to get all the way from the tank to the injectors?Am I being paranoid?People have been watching me.

Did you change the oil? Refill it?? Most HG blowouts put water in the oil.
Turn the engine over at the crank with a breaker bar to check for any drag. It should be firm but smooth.

Yes I changed oil and coolant.
I drained the oil and coolant before I started the job. Then refilled it at the end, just a couple of hours ago. Then went to get new plugs and wires.I also turned the crankpulley with breaker bar the day before yesterday when I set the timing, with no resistance. Also when I put the battery in and turned the key it turned over, sounding normal, like before the project but the battery only had enough juice for three seconds.A couple of days before I started the project,a little over a week ago,I left my radio on overnight which killed the battery and I charged it that day and only drove it for a couple of hours then started the tear down the next day,so the battery had already been compromised.95 Toyota pickup 4x4 3.0 v-6

Yes, it WILL take a little longer on the first crank, but make sure the VAFM is connected & that you didn't blow the 80-amp EFI fuse under the hood. You shouldn't have to crank more than 5-10 seconds.

Alls well that ends well
Thanks guys.charged the battery and it started right up.The engine compartment smoked a lot for a couple of minutes which was probably debris I blew all over the place when I was cleaning the block.that stopped.the exhaust is louder cuz when I let it hang while doing the job the alreak rotted connection from the Y pipe to the catalytic kinda crumbled.but I just put twenty miles on it and it ran great.Gonna let her cool and check all fluids.Thanx again guys. This site waeady was instramental in getting me thtough this taxing ordeal.
