Finally dug into my rear axle project today...
It was sounding ROUGH so I parked it about a month ago. I had let the rear end run almost dry of gear oil from a loose fill hole fitting over the past few months. Diff has a whine & some play, the driver side bearing was GONE & gear oil was EVERYWHERE:

Yeah, well; it was making so much noise I figured it would have in the next 20 miles~
I wish I'd made a video of how much play was in the bearing...I could move the wheel a half inch!

Pulled the other axle in the rain yesterday...not as bad. I think I am missing an oil seal for each axle....there's an o-ring, inner and outer seal, and bearing, right? crap.

Here's three of the four parts (doh!) you'll need for this project. The fourth is the inner oil seal, which I'll be picking up tomorrow:

you don't have to worry about them locking up on you as much as you do them letting loose and letting the axle shaft slide out of the axle tube while you're driving 
those things were definitely shot though! if you've got a press, it's a pretty easy job

Well that's weird. Mine doesn't. I wouldn't be able to pull the axle without opening the diff. and removing the c-clips if I had c-clips. I can't even find the c-clip in the diagram in the service manual for 86.

The c clips are right behind the bearing...they are the retainer for the bearing assembly. You can see it in this pic:

good luck ge3tting the old bearings off. i stalled a 50 ton press and caused runout in one shaft, so after finding a replacement i cut the cage off the ball bearings so i could seperate the inner race from the rest, still stuck on axle, put it in a wood jaw vise and cut the inner race with a cut off wheel almost to the axle, then smacked it with a fat wide punch causing it to crack where i had cut a groove. then it slid right off. i hope this helps i have done several with this method and seems to be as fast if not faster than rigging everything up in a press. however if you can press it out effortlessly thats cool too
