Finally buying my 4runner

Soon i will be buying a stock 2nd gen 4runner. Im looking to lift it 3", and run 31" tires.
I live in Colorado, so i want a car that can 4wheel good, yet be reliable at the same time (Driving occasionally 7 hours from college back home.)

Because of finally saving up enough money, I have 4000 to spend on parts+install depending on which car i end up buying. I know that you can get suspension lifts, body lifts, I just don't know much about 4-wheeling.
I really just want what performs well and looks alright.

any help would be much appreciated, i just want a quality kit that will last a long time.
Thanks

Welcome to YT...probably should have posted in Newbie tech though..lots of broad questions in this one..
Look at BJ spacers up front, maybe LC springs in the rear...staying a smaller tire like a 31 is a good idea=won't run into as much trouble with gearing...

If you're talking about buying a 2nd gen and then dropping $4,000 on mods, I would combine all the cash and go with a stock 3rd gen. just my .02

you can fit 31s stock and lifts dont really help you preform... id save your cash buy a nice 2n or 3rd gen and put some 31 ibch a/t or m/t on it...

ir you wanna lift do bj spacers and land cruiser coils in the rear.. if you are gonna offroad a locker will be your best mod.

To tell ya the truth I love the 2nd gens. Im planning on getting one that has a new engine and clutch for 3700.
So with the bl spacers and the land cruiser coils, what kind of locker would you recommend?
