feeling slightly overgeared with 3.0L 4.88 33x10.5
when I switched to 4.88s from 4.56 with my 32x11.5 BFGs I could feel a big increase in torque.
since changing to 33x10.5 I am feeling overgeared and kind of wish I had gone with 5.29.
I remember both Zuk and Ganoid telling me that I could choose to 'go with the gusto' and gear a manual running 33s at 5.29, but I was worried that I would be redlining all the time. Just my opinion, the 32" tires were perfect with 4.88, and with 33" I'd say that 5.29 would be super sweet. I wish I could simply regear to 5.29 but with the truetracs in there it would be just too pricey. anyway, i still have power and it seems to be 'stock'...but I simply liked the extra torque that lower gearing brings! anybody else running 5.29 gears on 33" tires with a manual 2nd gen? I think that if I ever do it again that's what I'll choose. thanks for letting me vent guys!

I run 35's with 5.29 and it's a big differance from the 32's and 5.29's and think with 33 it would be fine. I lose pulling on hill's but i have 220,xxx on my motor so that maybe a factor but the way they pull on flat ground I can run 80 no problem so I think I would pick up the pulling on hill's and still get 75-80with the 33's.

4.88 w/33s manual 2nd gen
don't get me wrong...the 4.88 gearing is 'fine' with the 33s on a manual, but
I compare it with the torque I felt when I had 32s and its less. I think it was mountaingoat who said that one of the best ways to get power in an older engine is gearing, I think that's true. IMHO i'd be happier having a lower gearing, for hills, and it would match the RPMs better. at this point, 5th gear is not so useful for me, if I want to have power I keep it in 4th gear even at 65/70MPH, 5th gear drops me way back down to below 3000 and just below my nice powerband even at highway speed, so I'm just missing it in 5th gear until I start going 75mph or so. just a little lower gearing would get me in the pocket even at 5th gear. anyway it's nitpicking, but I may look into regearing to 5.29 someday with the manual. it'll be pricey tho! what kind of coin would I be talking to have this done I wonder, surely too much for comfort

I ran 33's with 4.56's and 4.88's. The 4.88's were perfect. You might make sure your engine is in good tune. I could pull all the hills in San Diego in 5th gear with the AC on and people in my '89 3.0 with 33's and 4.88's. As it is, 4.88's leave you about 6% under geared.

Yea the 4:88s should be enough man..honestly. My buddy runs 4:88s and 35s on his 4 banger!!! and he still has 5th gear. You might be loosing power somewhere. When sthe last time u did plugs and wires? all that crap can hurt you..evry little bit counts

I'll look into it!
tacoma750 and elripster...you've got me thinking! you could do all the hills in san diego in 5th gear with a/c on and people in? hmmm. don't think I could do the hills of seattle under those conditions...in fact I wouldn't even try it coming up from pike place market I have to be in 1st or second those hills are damn steep I am not from cali but I would say seattle and san fran have some pretty similar hills...never been to san diego but I guess it's steep too?
seems like I'm on my own thinking that 4.88 is not enough for the 33 manual so I will replace my taped wires (got burned on the headers!) and maybe that will help a bit! I checked on prices for regearing and it's completely out of the question...4.88 it stays! and...good to hear that you're happy with your 33/4.88 combo, I will enjoy the sweet setup I already have and stop bit&^ing
about my ratios!! ha thanks for the patience it's good to have this kind of support and encouragement! YT=primo

Oh and if your gears aren't enough for your tires, isn't that undergeared instead of overgeared?
