Hey guys,

New and already proud owner of a 1994 22re pickup with 168k original mileage.

Recently I have had a overheating issue according to the gauge that set me back about 400 dollars.

Long story short I took it to a shop after getting radiator flushed, thermo replaced, temp sensor replaced, checked for clogs and doing a ton of research.


The shop was baffled and checked everything from flow to head gasket to resistance on the sensors.

The concluded that I have a faulty gauge (the one located next to the speedo) as it will rapidly rise to HOT in about 10 minutes of idling or driving. Also they checked the resistance of the gauge and it was not the proper ohms.


Anyone else have this exact problem? The truck is not overheating the gauge just thinks so. Do I need to replace entire gauge cluster to fix this? should I just buy an after market temp gauge?

I know the truck is not overheating because when temp gauge is reading hottest they checked the temp and it was normal operating temp.

If that is indeed the problem.

Have you removed the temp sending unit and cleaned it and the electrical connection.

Tested the sending unit to make sure it works??

So the pulled the cluster off to measure the resistance of the temperature gauge that is calibrated to the resistance of the sending unit.

I think they gave up and said it is the gauge.

I would hate to see you change things all around and still have the problem.

yes as I mentioned we replaced the temp sensor the one that is for the gauge and also the shop measure the resistance at the plug and concluded that the gauge is at fault.

I don't think there is any doubt in that because the car is not overheating. I am just wondering what is the best way to approach this now. Replace the gauge or buy an after market one.

You can try this https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f116...ge-fix-271152/ also the ground connection next to the fuse box in the cab, I clean the metal cab connection with a wire brush and the ground wire itself. Try tightening the screws in the cluster seems to help. I seen you replaced the sensor. I have had luck with cleaning it with a wire brush and getting the hard water build up off of it.

you might be new to forums but it is almost always a good idea to read through the post's at the top of the forum labeled sticky. What that means is it covers a subject many of the people coming here, come here for.
The link terrys87 posted is a sticky and gives you near all the info you asked for.
Don't get me wrong starting a thread is good too, you just may have asked a different question with more info behind it. helps get things fixed faster. Good luck with your gauge.

I have a very similar problem and I would love to know what solution you found.

Just wrote my own thread and then in response yours popped up. However I always search before starting a thread and my search revealed nothing.
