I have a '91 with the short version fo the roof rack. I know on later models around '93 they started putting roof racks that came up close to the sunroofs. I have been wanting to get a Thule or Yakima rack that mounts overthe passenger area for better loading and spacing. Those things are expensive. So my brain has been noodling on this issue. I did a quick scan the other day while strapping down a surfboard and it looks like the short factory rack would fit over the cab area width wise even with the sunroof. i'm going to measure it to make sure and possibly even take the rear factory rack off and overlay it. if it works I will try to find a junkyyard short rack and mount up front and have 2 racks. does anybody know where you can get the stainless nutserts that are used for bolting it to the sheetmetal? a friend of mine told me a couple of years ago that he had bought an universal aftermarket rack for his pathfinder and it had some high quality stainless nutserts.
