Factory Rear Bumper Question

Hi all,
I have searched the forum and haven’t found much on OEM rear bumpers for 1984-88 pickups.

I am looking to replace my ugly universal rear bumper on my 1987 pickup with an OEM one. My old bumper has 2 license plate lights in addition to the 2 stock ones and thought 4 lights were over kill. I know about the rust issue and I will not use the bumper for towing or anything. I have seen two types of bumpers on these trucks and like the 1 piece chrome bumper.

So were these bumpers only found on certain trim packages (Deluxe, SR5) or certain model years? Does anyone have part numbers for either bumper?

Thanks!

Here are the bumpers I was looking at (stock photos):

your best bet would be to look at classifieds and see what comes up if you want an OEM bumper, not aftermarket. I have seen both styles on the 80s trucks, but IIRC the 2wd/4wd bumpers were different, like you have pictured - my dad's old 2wd 85 had the bumper from pic1 and my old 4wd 87 had the one from the 2nd pic. Also, not all trucks came with bumpers from factory. It's likely the base models that came without one.

Like Highonpottery said, If you're wanting an OEM you're gonna have to look on classifieds or local craigslist. but im telling you now if you're wanting one new. Toyota sells em for $430.11. haha or around there. Rear bumpers are harder to come by since companies don't really make aftermarket ones. Front bumpers are much easier to locate.

Thanks for the replies! I have seen both bumpers on both 4wd and 2wd trucks but didn't know if they were swapped at some point. It would be nice to have a new one but they are a little pricey.

I can attest that my local Toyota dealer did not display pickups with bumpers in 1988 when I bought a 4Runner and later a friend bought an SR5 pickup. I think they would add a Toyota step bumper if you wanted it but my friend went to Leonard's to get one installed for about $200. If you search "compact truck bumper" on eBay there are lots of Fey bumpers. This one is $183.40 with free shipping:

I picked up a new aftermarket rear chrome for my 90 pickup. Perfect match to the original from Toyota. Not quite the same as yours but they might have one for your gen if you check. Got it from CarID. Kinda pricey but it depends what you want.

The bumper you are showing on the blue truck, I have had to take 5 of those bumpers and make 2 out of them if you are wanting a factory bumper. Otherwise aftermarket is about only option.

I am reviving my old thread to ask another question.

Will a factory 3rd gen truck bumper directly bolt up to a 2nd gen truck? It seems to be much easier to find 3rd gen truck bumpers.

Thanks!

I see no one ever responded, so I was wondering if you ever found an answer as to whether a third gen bumper will fit a second gen?

My '87 has an ugly tube bumper that a previous owner installed, and it's junk and needs to go. Warn makes a nice looking rear bumper, but it's only 89-95.

All Pro, Marin Crawler, and someone else make bumpers that'll fit '87 but they're all tube bumpers, and none have a hitch that's tow rated.

I'd like a boxed bumper like the Warn, and I want a tow hitch to haul a jetski.

I'm not 100% on this, but with some Google-Fu you can find the answer or get closer to one -- the 1st-3rd gen pickups have very similar frame dimensions through the years, like close enough that people swap beds from one gen to another (and even with 1st gen Tacomas). Because of this I would assume that swapping bumpers could easily work or be easily adapted to the other body style with some simple bracketry changes.

@slimbobaggins - if you want to tow and are concerned with "tow ratings" then your only solution is a formal tow hitch independent of the bumper. The factory rear bumper is only good for standing on at best, and definitely not rated to really tow from or even to use as a pulling/recovery point - it will just yield and taco on itself. Unfortunately aftermarket bumpers either don't include receiver hitch in their design or won't officially mention their tow capacity - this is because they will have to pay for formal testing to be certified as a DOT approved tow hitch. The only companies that can really afford to do testing like this are the big volume producers like ARB.

Last time I was at the junk yard, I glanced at a factory rear bumper than I ultimately passed on, but it said right on the bumper it was rated to tow 2k pounds. So... real world testing has proven otherwise?

According to Warn that rear bumper in the pic I posted should be compatible with most aftermarket receivers, so I figured if I got that one I'd add an aftermarket hitch in conjunction... just don't want to buy it if it's not going to fit.

I never got an answer but I have been so busy that I have not really looked into bumper options for a while. I have found out that Toyota only sells the third gen style truck bumpers. I saw a new factory 2nd gen bumper advertised online, but then I looked up the part number and found out it was a really a 3rd gen bumper. I have heard that the 2nd gen truck bumpers were Toyota "approved accessories" and not an actual Toyota part.

@slimbobaggins - I have seen plenty of 2nd gen trucks around with 3rd gen bumpers so they probably just bolt up directly or need very minor modifications. I would think the Warn bumper would fit... I am not sure though...

Cool thanks for the response. I guess I need to head to the local yard and take some measurements if I'm lucky enough to find a 3rd gen in there.
