erratic idle 22re

Hello all, I am new here and know a fair amount about vehicles but I'm no expert. I have a 94 Toyota pickup with the 22re and its been sitting since September due to a blown head. Finally got around to replacing the head and the gasket but now I get a rough idle. It seems to idle OK for the first 2-3 minutes then it warms up and starts idling up and down to the point where it almost stalls. The only thing that seems to smooth it out is if I disconnect one of the vacuums from the PS pump. Below is everything I've done since the bad gasket

Short ram intake
Upgraded injectors from 2 hole to 4 hole
Replaced stock header with aftermarket. I have a small exhaust leak that I'm still trying to work out. Not sure if that would be an issue. I was told that the ecu would trim the fuel if needed. Tried puting the stock Air filter back in but no change. I have triple checked timing. Has new plugs, oxygen sensor, cap, rotor and plug wires. Ive adjusted the valves. To my knowledge everything is hooked back up. The only thing I've kind of worried about is the injector plugs because only 3 plugs are the same style and color but I just plugged it in to a connector that fit. I've been told if it fits its fine, it will work. Any info would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Have you adjusted the idle air screw?

I agree. Try adjusting the idle screw. By disconnecting that hose you're doing the job the idle screw should be doing: allowing additional air past the throttle valve.

Yeah I just tried adjusting the idle screw and it changes a little but not a lot. Also have white smoke coming from exhaust now. Drips water but no mixing of fluids. Only starts loping after it starts to warm up. I'm gonna pull the plugs and see what's up.

Edit: so I just pulled number one and its carbon fouled. Its a brand new NGK. Is it possible that the 2 white wires on the o2 sensor are backwards and its throwing the computer off? Its a universal Bosch. The 2 white splice into the 2 black.

old gas?

If it's been sitting for half a year and the tank was not full (i.e. lots of air in the tank), then your gas could be bad. You can check it via the color (new gas=clear, old gas=brown). There's a drain plug on the bottom and your local disposal/trash company should accept the old gas.

If the color looks okay, maybe add some HEET or SeaFoam to the gas to bind any water and fill the tank to dilute the old gas.

I don't now for sure, but letting it sit may have created sludge that can clog your fuel injection so it's better to drain and replace to be safe.

P.S. Hindsight: you could have filled the tank and added HEET to it if you knew it was going to sit for a while.

I might have figured it out. Won't know till Monday though as I'm going out of town for the weekend. Anyway I upgraded the injectors from 2 hole to 4 hole but didn't do anything with the ecu so I think its flooding out after 2-3 minutes. Gonna hit the junk yard Monday and I'll let you know. Thanks

You could try unsealing and adjusting the idle trim mixture. Yes, it's adjustable. It's under the small silver plug on the top of the AFM.

Well I figured it out. When I put my head and everything back together I mixed up the vacuum line that's supposed to go from the tvv valve to the egr-vm. It was connected to the manifold instead. Thanks for all the help guys. I'm new to this whole yota experience but I'll help out wherever I can.

Yup, I've made similar mistakes with those hoses. When I replaced all the hoses, I kicked myself later for not using different colors -- that would make it easier for taking photos and tracing lines, rather than labels which can become faded and fall off.

I do two dots on either side of the connection, that's 36 different identifiers.

Keeps the hair brown.
