Engnbldr rebuild and cam

so its time to rebuild my 22re, '88 4 runner 5 speed yada yada, and i have been doing some reading and it looks like the stuff from engine builder is the best, but i have one issue and 2 questions about it:

The issue, it diesnt come with a new water pump. every other full 22re rebuild i have seen comes with a new water pump. why not engine builder? how important is getting a new one?

Quesetion 1: okay everyone knows he sells the best stuff, but the kit im looking t comes with Rock brand gaskets and from the reading i have done they are prone to fail very early. any input on this?

Question 2: which cam would you guys recomend? its mostly a daily driver/ weekend wheeler. which would give me the most power? anyone have the cams and got feedback for me?

Thanks guys! I <3 yota tech

a mild 260 cam will net you more low end power with out to much mpg loss. re-ground camshafts are a good way to go! try deltacams!

delta has 272 cam they been making them for years, any cam shop should have something give or take alittle in the ways of 260,269 and 272. i do know that a 260 is a best seller at delta, very good way to get for alittle more low end power for out 22re!

my setup isn't best to give info to anyone really, my block has been shaved 10 thous bored 20 over, and has a weber 32/36 on it, with 31's and 4:10s it does have power but it's mostly in the 3,000-4500ish range. I don't like the bottom end torque I am getting. Some of that undobtedly is due to the fact the block has been shaved and I don't have an adjustable cam gear on it.

The EB water pump is $35 extra. You could go genuine Toyota from the dealership for a few bucks more. I went with the EB pump. At 198xxx miles it's cheap insurance...

that 270/430 is for freeway driving, it has more kick in the top end. I'm running the 268C Torkr, and I love it. Has the low end you need off roading, and the power keeps coming until around 4,500. I went with his street RV head as well so that helps a bit

I have his whole kit in my truck, with the 270 cam. The only thing I did different was I ported the head a bit, used a Cometic MLS head gasket, and ARP headstuds. Other than that it's all EB in my engine. The 270 cam did loose me a bit of lowend but the dual cases makes up for it.

Hey, i need your input. i have about 700 miles on my rebuild. it was a full engine builder kit with the 268 cam. i had the head milled 1200's, it has a long tube header to a strait piped factory exhaust. i have 31x10.50's on it and its only getting 15 mpg. it wont hold speed on the interstate good in fith so i only use fourth. i am trying to hold 55-60 and fith gear i have to have the pedal pushed way more to manage that speed. i have a check engine light that has the 02 sensor code but i have tried three oxygen sensor's and none fixed it (All were used but i figured at least one would work... but i did have mice or something chew through the wires and i rewired them back together and taped them up all with good conections.

I was expecting way more than 15mpg out of this little truck especialy after the rebuild. its a 4x4 five speed. i understand that its not gonna be as powerful as my old truck ( 400hp+ 900lb. tq dodge with a cummins) but its a turd just trying to daily drive it. any input is appreciated. thanks

261 all the way for what you're saying are your needs. I LOVE the power I've got from it, almost like adding a gear on the hills. ALMOST, lol. BUT.... I also have the LCE Cold air intake, slightly built up head and LCE header 4-1 with 2.25" to the back, high flow Magnaflow CAT and Borla decent Muffler, bored 20 over as well. LOVE this cam, and unlike what XXX mentioned, I have great power almost off the line, from 1500 or so all through to 4500, or so.

I think you were following my troubleshooting thread, or at least stopped in, right? It's in my sig, but it's so long, it can be difficult to fish through, hahaha. I go through the whole CAM options, and I found this to be best for a DD, in my opinion and for my needs.

Far as the water pump, not worth the worry to sweat why it's not in there, and there is somewhere on his site an option that includes the water and oil pump...Just call and talk to him, he's NOT a heavy 'BUY MY STUFF' kinda guy. Just tell him what you want and he'll tell you what's best for you to do, regardless of who you choose. TOD IS THE MAN, IMHO. I heard about the gasket thing, too.... I got my gasket kit with an OEM HG, timing gasket and exhaust gasket.... worth every penny, again, IMHO, lol. Also got an Aisin Water pump, but I've heard that Rock just buys OEM pumps and shaves off the 'Aisin'. lol. Oil pump, I believe is the same story... again, just ask Tod, he'll tell you. (you could always piece it together from other vendors... I got my Steel Timing Kit from LCE, Altrom, and other stuff from an OEM Toyota Discounter, Block inners from Engnbldr, etc., etc., lol)

Best wishes man, I'll be watching!
