engnbldr 261 cam valve lash?

engnbldr 261 cam valve lash?

I'm trying to lash the valves on my 89 22re with 261 engnbldr cam, and some things are not making sense. So i got the first 4 valves lashed down good enough but then when i go to do the second set after spinning the crank 360, some of the valves are being pushed open by the cam (#2 exhaust) and im assuming i dont want to adjust them while that is happening b/c they wont open then, right?

i am at tdc (0 on the pulley) and gold link is lining up with the pin on cam.
then i spin 360 and link does not line up, then another 360 and link doesn't line up and then another 360 and then on the 4th 360 the notch lines up with the link again. Newbie question but is this how it is supposed to be?

So FSM says to be at tdc on 1 and then lash intake valves 1 & 2 and exhaust valves 1 & 3 which i did and they were all closed, Then spin 360 and lash the remaining valves but heres where im stuck because i do not want to lash them while they are being pushed open? right?

So I guess my question is, is the lashing procedure dif with the 261 crawler? I know intake and exhaust is .007 and .009, but is the order the same as stock?

you have to be TDC on the compression stroke of #1 to start. ie set at TDC (0 on crank pulley) when #1 intake and exhaust valves ar shut (rocker arms loose) and #4 intake and exhaust valves are open (rocker arms tight) While at this position set the #1 intake and exhaust, #2 intake and #3 exhaust valve lash. Intake valves are on the left (passenger side) Exhaust valve are on the right (drivers side). Then rotate 360 back to TDC (0 on crank pully which now puts you TDC on #1 exhaust stroke) then set #2 exhaust, #3 intake and # 4 intake and exhaust valve lash. You should do this with the engine already warm. If not possible set them and then run the motor till normal operating temp and set again. Drive about 500 miles and recheck valve lash again and remember some valve noise is normal. Do not try to remove all tapping, you will overheat and possibly melt your exhaust valves.

TIP 1: Make sure you put the valve cover back on before re-starting motor. I have done this the first time I set the lash on this toyota. I tell you what, it's not like a chevy push rod motor where you can run the motor with the covers off. It makes a big mess.

TIP 2: Use your old valve cover gasket first then after setting lash when warm put the new gasket on.

good point gnarly, but I guess in theory it heats them up.

I would suppose a disabled egr would heat the valves up more than a tighter lash would. Which is not a problem as I had to do that when I installed my weber. So I retract my statement of burning the valves.
