Engine swap or rebuild?

Hello ya'll. I have a 95 4x4 pick up with a 22re. It has been sitting since 06. Only started once in a while and driven in the yard by its previous owner. He stopped driving it cause it was burning water when it got hot. He bough a new tundra and gave me this truck last year. So I am just now getting around to fixing it. I am almost positive it has the dreaded timing chain guide failure. The oil is a milkshake. So my question is. Replace timing chain and water pump and head gasket? Or find a motor to swap? My fear is the lower end of the motor is shot due to how long it has been sitting. It may have been sitting in chocolate milk since 06 or sometime between now and then. I live in Maine where it gets pretty cold. Not sure if that makes any difference. I just would like some opinions on if I should try and rebuild or swap out. Thanks.

when you say swap do you mean another 22REC engine or something like a 3.4

In any case this engine needs to be pulled out.

Pull the oil pan pull a few bearing caps see what they look like.

see if the crank journals are rusted and pitted.

if this was run with antifreeze in the oil the bearings are destroyed.

Then you can figure out what course to take.

Either way you should pull it. Really look at a swap either way. This motor has been neglected for many years. If I could find a complete 3.4 wrecked truck I would upgrade power big time. But a 22r swap is really fast if you are practiced.

After having built a few of these motors, and daily driving one for a few years now, i'd say swap it for something else. It sounds like it's not your primary vehicle and it's ok for it to be out of commission for a while. If you can get something more modern in there i'd say don't even mess with another 22re. If you're looking at a new engine anyway you might as well put that money towards something better.
