Engine replacement

I've never had any major engine work done before so I'm hoping someone can give me a ball park figure of what to expect for replacement of mine. I was just quoted $2800 for a new motor, installed. I Thought that was way high. I need to ask him how that breaks down, but what should I expect for a motor install? How much labor? I've seen plenty of new engines from respected builders ranging from $1k to $2k. $800 to $1800 for labor seems high.

Also any other tips for advice would be appreciated.

Thanks

EDIT: The motor is a 22re.

Are you talking about 22re or 3vze? Pricing and labour for them would be different.

KarKing

I have a 1990 4runner 3.0 I'm looking for a rebuilt engine. I've heard good and bad about Oregon engine rebuilders. Anyone have any experience with KarKing out of California?

I would say that 500-1000 is a good price for install labour then whatever you can get the engine for. A rebuilt 22re should run you from 1-2k ( big range because it depends on parts used to rebuild). So you are looking at anywhere from 1500-3k.

I was quoted 1595.00 for a rebuilt motor and installation. Basically drop truck off and drive away with a 1 year warranty. If I installed myself it only would have been 1295.00 so the install was only 300$
