Engine Rebuild

Ok, thinking it's time for a rebuild.. Here's the deal, got a 87 4runner 22re a couple months back with 211,xxx on it now and it has a good ticking sound to it, plus I think the head gasket is going out because I caught it blowing some white smoke a couple weeks back (head gasket was replaced by previous owner 20k ago). Wondering what I'm getting into and any suggestions on rebuild kits? Seen good word on here about engnbldr.com kits, wondering about some of the cheaper ones. If anyone has done there own rebuild I'm looking for some suggestions. Thanks guys.

Here are a couple rebuilds done with ENGNBLDR kits both full of pic's both first time engine builders ton's of info and parts info.

IAMSUPERBLEEDER's build lots of good info and pics you can see what a PRETTY(even though he stole my color combo OH wait I think I may have stole his either way you can see both of us did the same basic colors but did them a bit different) engine looks like and how it go's together. Plus lots of questions answered during the build that can give you in site on whats right and whats wrong in part's combination's with the 22re

This is mine and I am just about finished had to make a few changes and just ordered a new cam today to get it right. The cam I got with the head was to much cam meaning it comes on way to late for my motor and tire and gearing selection. I will be going with the ENGNBLDR 268 and bleeder went with the 261 so when I get mine complete you will be able to see or at least understand the difference's in the two cams if you decide to go with either of them.

Thanks for the links, they help. Has anyone here done a partial rebuild? Not sure if a total rebuild is doable for me.. do you HAVE to take the block to a machine shop and have the cylinders honed? My yota is my daily driver, was hoping a rebuild would be doable in a week and for not much more than the cost of the rebuild kit... it may have been wishful thinking after looking around here :/

With that many miles it is very advisable that you do , You just can't tell my eyeballing if the cylinders are out of round , the head surface is flat , you can feel if there's a ridge on the cylinders but if I was you I would do the complete rebuild . In reality it took me a couple months just like IAMSUPERBLEEDER to get all the parts and motor work done but in the end I believe it is going to pay off 10 fold.

I think I have finally got mine done tonight but a few tiny loose ends to wrap up tomorrow I got my 2nd new cam in just mins ago it's the ENGNBLDR 268 so I should have a video up of how it sounds tomorrow if your interested , should be good for another 2-300,000 more miles well worth the $1200-1400 I have into it.
