Hey tulsa can you post pics of what yours looks like, i have been on the phone all day calling people that said it cannot be done......right, to put the molding back...grrrrrr!!!! this pisses me off the worst. so they actually put the universal trim on the glass then glue it in, like glue the trim to the frame? if so the only thing holding your windshield in is a glued piece of rubber??? i am asking cuz i want to explain to them how i want them to install it

can try to post pics tonight, but can tell you the trim did go on the glass first, but it has a tiny lip on the backside. The glass is glued to the body directly, and the trim is mosty along for the ride. he had two diff universal's one smaller than what i went with which would not have covered the gap. The one i have is maybe an inch wide. Just a little wider would have helped att he top corner where it is puckered some. Had him shoot a little extra glue under the top corners to keep it from puckering more and going all the way into the gap.

Now im getting somewhere talked to a guy on the phone said bring it down there so i did he sounded very confident he could do it, showed me the wide flexi stuff and how he would do it on a windshield in the back !!! i think i finally found someone who knows their stuff!! price was a little high but it sure beats payin $300 for chrome trim plus the cost of windshield and installation. taking it down there at 9 A.M tomorrow. i will post pics of how it turns out if anyone is still interested in this subject.

Ok everyone got it done and i can say i could not be happier!!!!!! i would say go for it but like mentioned in this post before dont let them do it unless they are confident they can do it. i talked to probably six different people before i found this guy.

that looks great, your guy must have been really careful with the glue, it's almost perfectly straight.

yeah there is a little glue if you look at the top corners where he glued them down when it dries i will scrape it off, its still a little sticky right now. and yeah there is a ton of glue. best part they cleaned all the rust and put five coats of primer on so my window will stay intact for a while......i hope

Damn that looks good! Looks really sweet with the black paint I'm planning on repainting this summer and want to replace my old glass as well. Gonna have to find out about the black factory stuff or try and find someone to do such a pretty job.

well that link i posted earlier in this post has it in chrome or black, its the same price for either, it doesnt show a picture of it but i have seen it and looks good alot better than the chrome, a white truck would look real good with it in my opinion. my black is still factory paint its just been well taken care of i am the third owner and it has absolutly no rust other than the surface rust that was where the windshield was that i hope i have resolved...at least for the next 20 years haha! if only i can keep rocks off tha new glass......

The place is called Weathers auto supply, it cost $225 to have it done, little high but this is custom work done right plus they cleaned up the rust and primered it good to prevent further rust. i didnt have a prob. payin that
since that chrome stuff is higher than that without the cleanup and new glass. their number is (205) 333-5552. they will have to order ur glass and will have it the next day and will take a couple hours for it to set and all. depending on where you are in bham only bout 45 min. from me to downtown bham.

Stock 87 do you have part number and source for that generic moulding. AND JC Whitney Ref is for gaskets not molding. I just got back from my window guy and he said my window is glued in on my 89 and that a gasket would not work(maybe 87 and 88).

I solved the leaking problem, replacing the glued system by a Toyota weatherstrip used in Japanese Hilux minipickup from 1984 to 1988. Is a perfect fit. The toyota code is 56121-89117 (found in Toyota EPC). Maybe you could not find it in U.S. (I live in Chile South America).

A shop do it for me because I needed to change my windshield (had some cracks) and also I donīt have any experience replacing windshields.

Note: Toyota weatherstrip code 56121-89117 will work for 1st generation 4Runner.

The thing about the weatherstrip mounting is that it may reduce the strength of the roof. The urethane glue system bonds the windshield to the body and makes the glass a structural element.

What I did on mine was to go ahead and glue in the glass with the urethane adhesive and then I filled the gap around the glass with black urethane roofing caulk and smoothed it out. Now there's no place for water to collect and cause rust and it looks like black trim.

question: I just got an 86 and unfortunately there is rust around the windshield. Doesn't look too bad passenger side is really only surface and drivers side is a little worse goes down into the metal but not deep. What would you guys recommend doing? you thing the drivers side is fixable or should i expect to just have to replace the a pillar?
