Electrical Connection off rear of 5spd Trans

I have a 90 4Runner, 22RE, 5spd, 4x4, and just did a complete motor rebuild. After getting everything back in and now with 500 miles on it (oil change in the morning with the filter getting cut open for inspection) everything seems to be okay. The only thing I cannot figure out is.....

There is a 2 wire connection coming off the rear-top of the trans. I cannot tell what the color of the wires are, nor do I know what they are coming from. The wires come out of a cylinder (attached to the top of the trans at the rear) and the wires are glued/siliconed (?) into it. The wires come off to the passenger side and connect with a light grey connector (with 2 prongs on the bottom) that runs up to (?) the main harness under the intake and then (I think) down to the front diff.

What I'd like to know is which wire (coming out of the cylinder type thing) connect to the other half of the connector as the wires were not only pulled out of the connector, half of the connector was lost. I'll try and get some pics tomorrow as I'm changing the oil. Really hope someone can help me out.

Thanks,

Tim

I don't know if anything is not working on my cluster. Everything appears to be working.

It appears that the 4wd light is not working, though known to be a good bulb. I will just do a quick disconnect/buttsplice and see how I get on.

Thanks waskillywabbit!!

Still no light, but

The bulb is good. It now seems like the trans will not shift into 4H, but seems to shift into 4L. Not 100% that this is the case, but will try and get the truck back up on jackstands and see.

Is it possible for the transfercase to engage 4L and not 4H? Where should I start looking to fix this?

I just did an engine swap and only remember disconnecting one connection to the trans. or the front diff.

Okay, truck is up in the air, no front tire movement. When I shift into L4 you can see that the rear tires are moving slower than in 2H/4H so a signal is getting somehere, just not to the front.

All I did was take the motor out and put it back in. The only thing I did to the trans was install a new clutch pack and disconnect one 2-wire connection (that I am aware of). 4L/4H were working just fine before the motor swap.

Pulling out what little hair I have left. Got to get this fixed before the ski season.

I hope this pic of wiring will help check wires in grid B,32 and A,32.
You may have a broken wire or bad connection. Get the vehicle up and get a good look at your wire color.
save this picture and print it off and take it with you.
You said back of transmission is where the wires come from but is it the transfer case the wires go to?

Hey thanks Biosys,

Would you have a higher res shot of that?

Ok, just went out and looked. All fuses are good (sadly I hadn't checked them before). The wires that I originally asked about going from (?) to the top rear of the trans (not transfer case) are White w/black stripe and Green w/with stripe. I'll have to go back out in the morning and try to trace the wires back to where they originate from. The wires that they connect to on the round thing on top of the trans are both all black.

Electrical and transmissions are by far not my strong spots and this is my first 4x4. I'm really good at disassembly and braking things, putting them back together not so much, but I did build the engine and it is running really good with 700 miles on it now.

I am glad the engine runs good.
Click on the picture and Download the file and then open it in your own photo program

Ok looking at the wiring diagram thw Wt/BLK wire is ground. make sure the ground is good.
Green/White goes to your Automatic Disconnect Differential Switch.
Do you have Auto Locking Hubs?

I'm going to say yes on the Auto hubs as I do not have to get out to engage 4WD.

Another item I've checked, the vacuum lines from the passenger fender down to the diaphram on the Ft Axle, Good.

I also traced (not 100%) the Gr/w and Wt/bk wires back to a second connector that then goes on to the front differential.

Another update.

I jumpered the connector and can hear at least one click of a relay. I'm thinking that I'm hearing 2 clicks but not really sure. Put the truck back in the air, back into 4H/4L and still nothing and no light on the dash.

?
