EGR System Blocked from Factory?
Guys, sorry if this is answered somewhere else. Search did not provide anything for me.
My 1987 22RE 4Runner has what appears to be a plugged EGR system. It just has plates covering the two EGR passages that I see having a tube coming out of them and going around the back of the motor in other trucks. Is that only on California trucks? This truck was originally purchased in Spokane, WA where emissions standards are definitely not California strict. Take a look at the following picture, is this normal?

Ah, ok. I thought that might be the case. Iamsuperbleeder is from Florida and I could have sworn I saw the "PEAR" system on his. Thank god for not living in California. That system just looks like an extra exhaust leak waiting to happen.

I think somewhere around 88 they stated putting them on all the 22re's
why they were hit and miss before, I have no idea... could have something to do with Cali emissions, but that's odd then that Cali models DIDN'T have the system when the others did... who knows

My carb'd 87 also has the AIS system. I was refering to just the cali version of the 22RE that also has it. All the 22R's should have the system, as they're there to help the catalytic converter do its job better on the carbed motors.

that green plug by the water pump if I am not mistaken is for the dizzy. I thought all the 22re's had the crank case vent that routes to the intake manifold?
What I don't see on top of the mani though is all the vsv's.
according to this it looks like the PAIR system is a little different and the tubes are not on the exhaust side but just under the intake mani. This is only for the RN61 frame, but if you look at the RN55 frame there is no PAIR listed.
What I don't know is what the difference between the RN55L-MRHEA and RN61L-MREA frames are. I wanna say 1 ton verses half ton but I don't know for sure that I am right.
Toyotapartszone also lists only the 22REC as a motor in the 87. As far as injection goes. They also show a 3vze which I don't believe didn't get put in till 88?
This is using the pickups not the 4runners BTW. Frame codes would be different and there is alot of them. So I really don't wanna go through them all.
