EGR Filter?

When I was taking a look at my motor a couple weeks ago I noticed that there is a cap on the EGR valve. I opened it to find a dark colored filter underneath. Does this need to be replaced for any reason? Mine is pretty dark.

I found a video from one on a Tacoma to help

That's not the EGR valve. It's called the EGR modulator. That filter can be cleaned but you can buy a whole new modulator from Toyota for about $50.
The filter inside of it will get dirty, obviously, but what you need to worry about is the valve inside the modulator failing which would necessitate a replacement.

Moral of the story, don't worry about that thing unless you're getting EGR codes.
