ECT Power Light Troubleshoot

I just recently acquired a 95 4runner. im new to runners but not to mechanics. my ect power function isnt working. i have tried to bypass the switch and am having 0 luck. it worked when i got the it. i cleaned the console, and fiddled with the fuse block to stop the door buzzer and now it doesn't work.

im getting 12v key on power, and when i jumper that power to the bulb nothing happens. im baffled and want my ect to work!!!!

you jumpered power to the bulb? in the dash?

If you bypassed the switch properly (as in remove the switch and jump the leads) and you didn't see the light/get the ECT change then your next step is to check the wiring from end to end.

You should test your bulb in the dash to confirm that it's not just a burnt bulb.

Toyota uses grounds as the switches. That's about all I can add without looking at my wiring diagrams

This sounds like a clue.

Just what did you do to "stop the door buzzer"?

correct, i have jumped the leads. where do these 4 wires go? i see them inter a big loom in the center of the dash then disappear. if i found where they end i could jumper them at that point and see what happens. does this system require the bulb to work to be functional?

im thinking the switch got some cleaner in it and shorted something out. but it has 12v key on and then another voltage to the little green light. so the problem is down stream wherever it goes.

Which Transmission do you have?
Go to this link, after you find which tranny you have, and look at the wiring diagram that shows the ECT switch.

Don't randomly blast 12 volts into the ECU.

According to the wiring diagram, you should jump the black-orange wire to the Green-Orange wire at the connector to the ECT selector switch. If your dash light ECT doesn't come on, go for a drive with the terminals jumpered. Test it between jumpered and then pull it off see if you feel a difference. ECT on vs. off is significantly different.

If that doesn't work, I would point to your ECU. Lucky fo ryou it seems that all the ECT switch does is give 12 volts to the P terminal of the ECU.

Here is a wiring diagram with the switch.
