Driveline splined shaft
Alright guys, got a quick question. I had a 92 chevy and on the splines for the rear driveshaft, chevy added a plastic boot over the splines to help keep them from wearing and eventually causing excessive play. Do toyota's have that? Mine either did have and doesnt now or wasnt maintained for crap in its day cuz its is SERIOUSLY sloppy.

i don't think they did but i could be wrong. Lets be honest though do you think a piece of plastic boot cover will deter wear in you drive line? Probably not. The wear points in the drive shaft are the u-joints. If you have excessive play in the drive line they are most likely to blame. Then again you could be seeing something out of the norm and yours is different. If you drive shaft is truely defective at the splines as opposed to the u-joints then you might be into a more expensive fix like new drive shaft.

reason i was asking about the plastic boot was because if they did make one, i could maybe go buy another and put in on the splines to take up the slack. just bought the runner on saturday, after a very very vibrationy ride from dallas back to abilene, had a look at the u-joints (which i checked before purchasing and knew they were worn), I also found the driveline 90 degrees out of phase. thinking im going to be pulling the driveline and sending it out to have a new splined shaft welded on.

Yeesh...just talked to the driveline guy....$335.18 for standard length splined shaft, $529.28 for an extended one which will help when mudding....i was thinking welding on a couple splined shafts would run me roughly $150 and was definitely ready and willing to choke that much down, little much to repair the driveline though....to the wrecking yard we will go now i guess...hopefully find something worth a crap out there.

toyota drive shafts dont have that teflon? coating that you are referring to.
Ive seen toyota splines get worn out before, but its pretty uncommon. especially in a stocker..
did the new joints and re phasing help at all?

YES!!! u-joints and rephasing helped a ton, used to have a major vibration between 30-55 mph, now its just between 40-55 mph, but the vibration is much less aggressive and i believe is coming from the front right wheel end. I still havent had an opportunity to jack it up and check the wheel bearings up front or the cv joints, but that will all be happening next weekend, took monday off after turkey day and plan on getting that truck all suited up. Another thing now....took it out after work to see if the 4x4 worked yesterday after work, and yes it works, and yes I smoked my clutch...its on the list for next weekend too.

question : im fixin to pull my cat off and rod it out (think it may be a lil plugged), those plasma on the inside or ceramic still in 87??? either way, its comin apart, just hope its ceramic for easier gutting...

whelp....tried pulling it, of course the bolts are rusted and siezed...ill cut em off later and put new bolts in there...dont have time or patience for it today, have a headache.

yup, it was ceramic...got bored and decided to whip it out right quick. had to cut the bolts off, rodded it out in about 10 mins and reinstalled. was a little bit clogged, not what id hopped to find, but nonetheless...i now have a hi-performance cat on there , and it didnt cost me a dime.
