Hey guys, a 89 Lux owner from Australia here.

I've recently bought a Hilux 4x4, RN105 series with the 22R I upgraded from a 1994 3.8Litre Buick V6 powered Holden, which was easy to maintain and work on...

Well the Hilux has been going strong for me, only had to replace the clutch and plate so far (good mileage for an older truck, only 240,000kms - all the others i looked at had over 400,000kms)

Since I've had it, when I get it upto speed, around 40mph it has like a howling noise the whole time, but it gets worse, and much louder when I let off the clutch to slow down, or to grab another gear.

I've made sure the gearbox/xfer case fluids are good, I've greased all the nipples/zerks I could find along the driveline, pumped them full of grease until it was fresh

But still the noise remains...

Any ideas guys? I'm thinking about replacing the Center Tailshaft Bearing, as there is a bit of play and clunking when I take off...

Have you checked ujoint play? sounds like it could be a bad ujoint...if not then you might have problems!

What about throwout bearing?

i would say it is the pilot bearing if you did not replace it when you did the clutch.

Check to make sure your rear drive shaft is straight. I unknowingly bent mine one of our wheeling trips up north and my truck started making some weird ass drivetrain noises. I threw in my spare shaft and problem solved. You could see the wobble in the shaft when the tires were spun in the air.

What condition are the pinion bearings in the rear end in?

check your steady bearing if you go one and all the lug nuts on you're tire's too!!!

My vote is for the U-joints. Some noise under load, then howling without load sounds like you've got one that's done. Probably the back one, but check them all.

Thanks for the replies.. Sounds like too much stuff could be wrong. I will take it too a gearbox/diff mechanic, ask them for an opinion/price.. Then start replacing stuff myself

Does the clutch pedal feel itself transmit vibration? If it is, I probably is the throwout bearing.

Been thinking a while, and I can say... that my car makes some rear-end "groaning" noise when accelerating, more noticible over 30, and 'howls' when I let the pedal off, and it's not the u-joints- it's the pinon bearings.
Everything in the rear's been replaced BUT the pinion bearings, and that's cause I didn't have the tools to pull the outer race. And it got a lot quieter when I torqued things down and set preload, but didn't go away.
That's what happens when you launch a PWC with a 72 firebird and the rear goes way underwater.

alright guys problem solved, and it only cost me $150 and a spare afternoon.

problem was the rear LSD in my truck was on it's way out, and the ring and pinion etc was mashed to pieces....

got an open center 4.8 housing from a 4Runner which is 3" wider than the regular Hilux one now I just need some Flexy Flares to keep the police off my back for having tires wider than the car.....

after Xmas I plan to get a Lokka/Lockrite/Detroit Locker put in..

make sure you put 1.5" wheel spacers on the front axle too...

its not a s.a.s they come stock with that axle i dont think toyota gives wheel spacers?? i assume the rear axle length is like the old ones in 85 here!

he said he found a rear axle that is 3" wider than his original axle so that means he needs to make the front just as wide and put spacers on it.
