Drive-ability

I recently completed a engine rebuild on my 91' 3.0 Auto 4Runner 4x4

It runs great, passed smog check with ease, all vacuum line, sensors, emissions components are correctly installed / connected.

This is my question:

When driving or even just working the throttle by hand, there is a dead spot between 1500 and 2000 RPM.

It will throttle down smoothly until it reaches 2000 and then with a little more closing of the butterfly it will instantly drop to 1500 RPM and conversely when accelerating.

Does this sound like a Throttle Position Sensor issue or ??

Has anyone experienced the same thing ?

or Throttle Position Sensor.

Or worn butterfly valve in the throttle body.

Is the TPS normally located about midway in the mounting slots ?
I noticed that mine is adjusted almost all the way to one end of the slot.

You need to search here for "TPS adjust"....it's a little complicated.

I did a search as suggested and found:

http://www.4crawler.com/4x4/CheapTri...roubleshooting

Good read, went through it and checked and adjusted the TPS and the issue is gone.

It also reduced the automatic shift points which did seem high to me.

When I was finished, the TPS was about as close to centered in the adjustment slots as it would be if eye-balled.

Thanks for the help, now its on to suspension mods.

If anyone has a good direction to point me in on the road to articulation improvements feel free to point.

Loose the rear track bar and sway bar perhaps ??

Removing the track bar would be a bad idea. Removing sway bars will be better for offroad but worse on the street. In my experience leave the IFS stock and save your $ for a solid axle if you want flex.

SC87,

How did your BJ spacers and 2" springs work out, is it mostly for looks or does it really make a worthwhile improvement for off road ?

Honestly... IT LOOKS GREAT! haha. In my opinion it does not perform much better than stock. There is more room for bigger tires which is nice but I have already purchased a solid axle and have future plans for it. I have replaced EVERYTHING in my IFS system and still want and expect more out of it(lil' frustrating) The most "worth while off-road improvements" I have done would be lower differential gears and manual hubs. The best modification you could probably do for 4x4 purposes is a locker! My advice is to use this forum and learn from other peoples experiences so you dont flush money down the toilet.

I hear ya, I recently installed a Aussie Locker in the front of my 95' Jeep YJ and it made a huge improvement.

I found a new Aussie for sale locally on Craigslist for this 4Runner, I my grab it, they do work good.
