Does the starter have to be disconnected to remove the engine from the trans?
PLEASE HELP!!!!!!
I have a 95 4runner that I am trying to take the engine out I have already got the heads off, all the tranny bolts taken out and motor mounts undone. Do I need to take off the starter too??? And is there a certain gear the trans has to be in to disconnect the engine from the trans??

Yes, the starter has to be removed. The wires going to it are part of the engine harness, for one, and will be in the way if not being removed with the engine anyhow, and the bolts go through the engine block to the bellhousing, holding them together. Neutral is probably the easiest for removing the engine, but probably isn't critical. Just gives a little bit extra play to help with the clutch/flexplate from hanging up.
Then know it takes a some prying to get them apart if it has been awhile.
