I think timing chain jumped a couple teeth. It's way out of time. It has no compression. Gage doesn't even move(you can turn it over by hand to check this correct?)

The valves all look seated correctly except the exhaust on #1 cylinder. What do the pistons look like to you? I think that they hit them but they look fine to me. Just cleaned some carbon off for me .

It doesnt really look like the valves hit the pistons. Cylinders #3 & #4 both look like there could be an issue with the rings. The carbon is cleaned off some around the crown of the piston. With it torn down to this point it would not be to much more work or expense to replace the rings and rod bearings.

clean things up and with the head upside down fill the combustion chambers with fluid to see if there is leakage past the valves.

well, if we are asking opinions on what to do at this point - I would say if you can spare the 800 bucks - then do it right, have it machined and call ted at engnbldr.com and throw new pistons and rings in it - good as new

Thanks I don't think I'm going to be rebuilding this one. yet. I need to get it back on the road.

the compression test is supposed to be done with the starter used to rotate the engine over. i'm not too sure on whether or not doing it by hand will work

This is true. A minimum cranking speed is necessary to get accurate results.

Another place people make a mistake when testing compression is only cranking a certain number of revolutions. You should crank until maximum pressure is reached and count the number of revolutions so you can compare cylinder to cylinder.

Are the cylinders soppost to have some cross hatching left?

I am buying another toyota. 86 22re, auto. single cab. FOR 200$ cracked frame.
- is there any trouble swaping this motor into mine? with it being an auto. I'm going to leave all my EFI and throttle body on the truck. So all this will be used on this motor. It has 160,000 miles But oh well. If it runs strong. It had an easier life than mine. I think mine got ran pretty hard before.
