Disabling factory alarm on 1990 4runner?

Update 9/15/2007. I'm about to go insane. I hate this freaking alarm. I was able to bypass it in valet mode for the last year and today I am selling the truck. I unhooked the battery to remove my stereo and then this morning the alarm was going off for no reason. I do NOT have the REMOTE. I waited until it quit going off and it started and I pulled it into the driveway. It went off again and I disco'd the battery to get it to stop. I now went to start it and the STARTER IS DISABLED. I CANNOT SELL MY TRUCK BECUASE THE FREAKING ALARM IS STUCK ON.

Is there ANY way to disable this alarm? Please help this is urgent .....

Nobody? I removed the switch pod and thought it was fixed. About an hour later however the alarm went off. Anybody cured this yet?

To the best of my knowledge there was no factory alarm or keyless entry as far back as as 1990, and there is no mention of either one in my 1990 FSM.

it could be factory,my 91 runner HAD a factory, very easy to undo, remove center panel under radio cluster just in fron of console,ck under dash & at ignition cylinder, behind cover at B pillars,if it is factory there should be connectors at those locations with Y connectors that can be disconnected & then the harness on the car connected back together, cant remember if any behind glove box, hope this helps

It looks 100% factory and honks the factory horn, wiring harness is OEM toyota....I sincerely doubt it is aftermarket, I'll snap some pics.

I'll pull the plastic at those spots you metnioend and see if I can find any "Y" connections, so far I can only find straight harnesses.

Unfortunately I guess I will have to completely unwire it, I was hoping to pull a fuse, discon one harness, jump a wire, etc, so that if I wanted to hook it back up (going out of town, parking in bad neighborhood, whatever) I could. Oh well, guess I'll spend the money on a new alarm if I want to do that.

if it is factory I would think that toyota would make it plug & play. Aftermarket installers are the ones that slice & dice

I have the same system on mine. The manual is separate from the owner's manual.

To put the alarm system into valet mode: position the ignition key at ACC then press the button until the LED turns solid red. Your system is on valet mode: system does not auto arm and in fact, it's not even active. However, the led will still flashes to give an impression of an active alarm system.

Also you mentioned about your fob functioning intermittently. I bought a replacement fob here: link

Agreed. Your valet setting is the key for making it not arm itself. You can always turn the valet off later to make the alarm function again. In the center position, when the alarm goes off, does it siren and honk?

Dude, you are my HERO! I don't have the manual so I didn't know you had to put the key in ACC to get valet to work. I would push the valet button but it wouldn't seem to work, so I thought that setting was broken. You have made my life SOOO much quieter LOL

Yes, it gos off in the center position, but there is no siren in any setting. Only an annoying honking!! The "honk" setting is only for when arming/disarming. One honk = armed, two honks = disarmed. If you put it in the "honk defeat" it just flashes the lights to let you know. Kinda like a "silent arm" on today's systems.

So which remote did you go with, and does it work well for you?
Do you wish you'd gone with the other one that cost much less (or much more, depending...)... it looks like the bottom one has more buttons = more features?

One-button for $44
for $54
Two-button for $84

My alarm just decided to start working the other day while I was at lunch... I saw someone with a 3rd gen leave the parking lot, so I bet they armed my system when they disarmed theirs! It sure would be nice to actually control and use mine...

Per what the website suggested, I went with the first one on list (the $44 one). You may want to contact the site/seller first to make sure.

Not sure about more feature capable if you were to use the one on the bottom (the $84 one). I think the factory one has only three features: lock, unlock, and panic.
