dirty fuel from fuel filter

hey. So i've had a bit of recurring fuel issues since i've gotten my 4runner. 1992 4runner 1990 22re in it. So at first it had water in the fuel, which in winter was really messing with the system. Now it's not water. It was fine for the longest time. All summer basically no problems. But about 2 weeks ago i let my fuel get a little low..(red light was coming on). After that, it was ok for a bit then kinda started acting up, a little sputter here and there but it would usually get over it right away. Was on my way to a nearby town the other day when it started doing it. I kept going, and made it there and back. It sputtered a lot the way there, then i dumped some fuel cleaner in, made it a little better but the way home was still pretty rough. New fuel filter put in today, and after i went to test it... was good at first, maybe a minute. Then it started sputtering again. Fuel that came out of the filter i took off was a little murky, after looking at it again a bit of silt had settled on the bottom... guessing rust? It sat for a couple years before i got the truck. Is it possible some rust got past the filter? Could that do any damage to anything? I expected the new filter to help but it really didn't. Any help would be really appreciated as to what could be affected by this and whatever thoughts there are. Thanks

you need to drop your fuel tank...remove the fuel pump and put a new sock on it (filter on end of pickup tube) While off...Id rinse the tank out really good. Your picking up debris on the sock and restricting flow from the crap in your tank.

It sounds like the gas tank is full of rust.

You can get a new gas tank from www.partstrain.com for around 150.00, unless you get lucky and can find a good used one for less.

tried starting it today. usually starts up fine and then starts choking a bit, but it was sputtering right after starting today so it seems a bit worse... gotta wait till monday to get the filter for the pump tho.

If any of the rust particles get past the fuel filter and into the fuel injectors it can plug them up. Also, when you replace the gas tank also replace the fuel filter again, because there will be rust in it from the old tank.
