depressed, so posting about problems w/ my truck
ok, im depressed cuz its halloween, and i have spent every halloween up til now with either friends or family. i have none here. anyways, i was doing a full diagnostic on my truck today. heres what i have discovered
252,226 miles
159-160psi across all cylinders
needs a new front transmission seal
sounds like it needs a tranny rebuild/new tranny
needs a timing chain, guiders, etc.
has an exhaust leak
freeze plugs are shot
needs new muffler
needs a new clutch assembly
lights surge between super bright and super dim
it maybe be just the fact that im depressed and lonely about being so far away from my friends and family, but im feeling like its gonna be WAY to expensive to get it all fixed, (i know how to drop the tranny, but not how to rebuild it, and i can do freeze plugs, thats it) and its gonna cost me about 2000 dollars to get everything done in a shop, 1500 if i put a new tranny in it, plus the cost of the tranny. im thinking it may be time to go to a older 4runner or pickup. one question though, can you fit a 3 wheeler ATV in the back of an old 4Runner if you take the back seat out? im startin to think my truck is nothin but a money pit. any ideas about ANYTHING?

you can pick up a used tranny CHEAP man. I know atleast 3 within walking distance to of myh ouse for sale CHEAP. Just search around. Every older truck will ahve nonstop problems. Just gotta go with it, and fix the important stuff first. OO and you gota stop wheeln till you get it fixed :-( Thats what im doing..and it BLOWS. I havent been in th emud for two months, cuz there are small things i need to fix. WHeeling while you need to fix parts, just adds to the bill $$

oh yeah i know, ive been avoidin that too. im kind of thinking that the timing chain may actually be the weight of oil im using... it wasnt doin that when it was full of 20w-50, but i put 10w30 in it today to bring it back from low to full, and it suddenly started clanking. im gonna try 20w50 and see if lucas and mystery oil helps it. ill start lookin for a used tranny. my thing is im going to san diego this xmas, and i want it to be able to go there, drive around, and get back with NO problems, so im HOPING that its the weight of oil i used. the tranny i dont think theres any getting around that. same with the clutch. god stuff picks the worst time to mess up

x-2 that, paxil. good point. and i have been running a can of engine restore thru it every oil change. and ive been changin oil every 1500 miles. i do that so it doesnt have a chance to burn off. i dont know if its still burning, but i did an oil change about a month ago, and today it was 1.5 quarts low. dont know if thats good or bad, but yeah. and 160 compression.. isnt that perfect for a 22re?

every 18+ year old truck is gona have problems. My truck has its fair share of issues just like every other ancient truck. Just fix what needs to be fixed when you have the cash/time available.

Your compression is fine...'fresh' a 22RE's compression is 172-175 with a minimum of 129 so you are A-okay. I wouldn't change your oil as much though. Give it a chance to reach it's max efficiency...mine burns oil to but I still do oil changes at regular 5000ish kms and top it when needed. I know that oil takes a bit to actually reach a peak where it does its job the best. I think there was also a thread on that here a few months back. Is your truck rusty at all....like frame or body? If not, fix what you got. You know your truck the best and you don't want to be inheriting someone elses probs...unless you know someone personally that has kept up on stuff....even then. And hey, you got Yota tech buds! That's what we're all here for at odd hours through day and night....reliable as a toyota...alright, enough cheese.

yeah im tryin. thanks every1 lol dont mean to sound like a whiny girl, but yeah, im startin to get disgusted with how much is going wrong all of a sudden. so change it every 3000 miles huh? every 1500 miles is a waste?

just be happy that this crap is going on 19 years after the truck was made instead of a couple years like a lot of owners of newer cars have to go through. For example one of my buddies is having an insane amount of problems with his 2001 interprid (i know crappy car but still) the thing blew its headgasket and the auto tranns slips hardcore. Plus he just bought the car like two months ago.. For whatever problems you have it can always be worse

There may be an adapter avail. but none that I know of off hand....if there was an adapter it would prob. cost some coin...therefore keep searching and find the right one for your truck. When I was looking for a t-case a guy had the whole tranny/t-case for $300cdn...he wouldn't separate one or the other. Unfortunately he's a few hours too far for me to travel with my bad back. Look for something like that....maybe he ship$$$$$ LOL.

I will take a repair bill of 2500 on a truck I own every year any day of the week compared to a car payment on a new truck.
Sooner or later with proper maintenance the odds are you will come out WAY ahead.
A vehicle is a necessary evil IMO so why not make it into an investment and not a payment.
