my 3.0's are not very powerfull, my 93 barely merges safely, my 94(5spd) is much better, that being said, I think they are way more reliable than a cherokee, the motor and tranny will last forever in a cherokee, but they will nickle and dime u to death on the small bs. I personally...would rather wrench on my rigs once or twice a year, then have to be out in the garage all the time...my time is valuable to me.

Oh man.....that's too bad. You're not the first this has happened to, though. That is why the 3.4 swap is so recommended.
Hate if for ya, dude, but don't let that burn you from Yotas altogether. Every company's entitled to one lemon.

Dude that sucks!! I am having the same feelings.... once I get this 3.POS done I am putting a TBI 350 in my 95 runner. with the power to weight ratio I should get in the mid 20's on mpg. that would be an inprovment over the 3.0.....just something to think about.
I have 3 of the 3.0 and all are junk. I wish I know then what I know now
Good luck and I'll be starting a thread on installing a 22re into a 2gen runner here soon.

yeah i worked for toyota for a couple years not to long ago and they are a good company, but id love to know what kinda stoners they had working for them when they decided that 150 horses would move over 4000 lbs worth of a 4runner, and then install and engine thats a pos too. it sucks azz because this 4runner is a nice lookin vehicle and its got some style to it. and honestly id save up the 1500 bucks for a long block, but then i'll have a vehicle with the slow azz engine in it for 1500 more bucks. id put a 3.4 in it but 2 issues with that, i dont have the fricken 3-4 grand and it doesnt wire up to the tranny right...wth? i think im focken on this runner

IIRC, there are folks that have been able to install a 3.4 for atleast half that price, 76ANTHONY. That really is a nice 4rnr. I'd hate to see you give it up too quickly without atleast checking around some more.

nope, something about a solenoid or something, but if i use a t100 ecm and engine from 1995 im thinking it may wire right up and tow 3500 lbs safely, if thats the case then im gonna try and do this with my tax return and see what happens. i may have just picked up a job that gives me a vehicle to drive, if thats the case then i have the time to do it right, i can use my trans and i can tow my boat, that is 100% a problem solver right there and i can keep my baby........

Don't bother, cut your loses now and get a newer 4Runner 96-00 for a decent price. Just think the next thing to go is probably your transmission. I have a 3.0 in my 89 and it is absolutely the biggest gas pig I ever owned. I had many V8's get better gas mileage. Heck my 75 Olds Cutlass with a 4 barrel got better gas mileage than this truck does. Did I mention my head gasket blew as well? I put some homemade stop leak in it and it seems to be working. That is why within the next couple of weeks a Chevy 4.3 is going in its place

Dude check out the 3.4 swap threads. You should be able to get one for between $800 and $1,200..... Make sure you fet one that matches your tranny (Auto vs manual) Some have increadibly wired their own up ( ELVOTA0 But I am going the ORS wiring harness route ($700) Weither way it will be well worth it!
