Dad & son replacing HG on sons '95 3.0 - Questions???

Hey all:

Been reading Bump's. Kat's & others threads on replacing the HG on '95 3.0 with 148K. Just ordered the HG kit from ENGB for $192 (inclds. time belt). Talked to the machine shop today and he will crack check & surface for $75. Will get idler & tensioner from dealer tomorrow.

Below is something from the FSM link. The FSM says:

(b) Uniformly loosen the eight cylinder head bolts one
side of each cylinder head in several passes, in the
sequence shown, then do the other side as shown.
Remove the eighteen cylinder head bolts and plate
washers.
NOTICE: Head warpage or cracking could result from
removing bolts in incorrect order.

How does one "loosen" a bolt in several passes? I understand the TQ sequence. Are these tapered bolts?

Also, It indicates steps to remove cams which I hadn't planned on doing. Machine shop said it wasn't necessary. Do I have to remove the cams to get the head off?

Hope you-uns don't mind lots of questions. Our first attempt at surgery this deep into the auto's body. Don't want any "oops" to happen since I can't afford malpractice due to my neglinance.

Anybody want to come to Arkansas and twist a wrench, I'll throw in a weekend SCUBA trip. lol.

Safety & blue skies,

DJ

you do have to take the cams out.also if a valve job is done on the heads the valves will have to be readjusted.crack the bolts loose just a 1/2 turn or so in the sequence you have until all are completely loose.maybe a little more than 1/2 turn.make sure also to remove the cam bolts in the correct sequence listed in the manual.good luck
