Talking Cup holder mod with pics

SO I was sick of not having a cup holder in my 86 runner so I decided to make one.

Removed the stock armrest/storage cover
Traced outline onto some wood
Cut wood to shape
Used a hole saw to cut a large hole in the new cupholder/cover

Drilled holes for a 3 1/2" hinge from home depot
Built a little metal spacer for space between the hinge and where the stock one mounts

Covered in some black vinyl that I had left over from covering my rear seat delete panel
Mounted it up a viola I now have a cup holder

nice work but it looks too big for cans, and are you going to put something to hold the cups up?

hmmmm. I like the idea here. my big prob with the armrest/ center storage is the shortness of it. Plus with your cup holder, you could put a cheep walmart cup holder in it to hold cans or anything else with some good glue. just wrap the vinyl after you glue.

That's pretty slick. It's always irked me that my '86 PU didn't have cupholders. I never eat or drink in my vehicles but in the rare occasion I pick up some fast food I have no place for my drink! If I decide to keep my '86 I might just have to try this.

If it can be made large enough for a 40oz Budlight then you might be on to something.

I hate the cup holders in my '95, RIGHT IN FRONT OF THE HEATER in the mornings! Anyways, I was thinking of taking a Dremel and just shaving off the inside of one of the holes so I can fit bigger cups than just soda cans.

Looks good. It should have came that way from the factory, right? As far as cans go, If you guys want something smaller then you can do the same thing Pirate did & just slip in a cup holder. Can be found at any boating supply store. I would rather have a holder for a 32 oz. size drink vs. a 12 oz. can myself.

iv done that. i used a 2'' sanding drum on my drill. i can now fit a sobe bottle or most med. sized drinks with no problem.

that was my logic aswell, I might pick up one of those "adapter" one of these day or just make one.

Anyways it's pretty much the perfect spot for a drink since it's out of the way but still easy to reach. Also since most of the cup fits inside it doesn't move much so spillage is not an issue.
