Cruise Control Swap

I'm looking to swap out the stock cruise control in my '93 4Runner for something newer that doesn't wait until it is 5 MPH down, then gun the engine.
Has anybody swapped a later version with success? I have searched Yotatech, but haven't had much luck. If you can give me a thread or some help I would appreciate it.

More to the point, has anyone swapped in cruise to a truck/runner that didn't come with it from the factory? (ie snagging the whole system from a junkyard runner).

not to hijack...

My 93 CC works great, maybe something is wrong with yours? Have you tried adjusting the cable? I have a 2001 Taco CC actuator if you want to try that.

I have both a 90 and 93 4Runner. Both do the MPH drop then race to restore. Would a newer unit, ('96 or later) bolt in and hook up electrically with out much trouble?

Also, when they bring it back to the set speed, it is usually 4-7 MPH over the set speed.

I don't know but I doubt it.

I know the cable end that connects to the throttle body is different. To connect my 93 CC up to a 2001 throttle body I had to cut off the end of the cable and weld a new end on:

The older actuators worked by a vac line, I guess the newer ones work by a servo motor.

I have been looking into this, because of my 3.4 swap (and the fact that I have all the parts in the donor to play with it!)

I have decided that I will try my original vacuum system first, as it will be the easiest. If it works, great, fine - but I had the same issues with it on my 3.0. I'm going with the original, first, in hopes that the added power of the 3.4 will compensate for the lack-luster workings of the 3.0 cruise.

If it doesn't work to my satisfaction (which I fear will be the case), then I'm going to transplant the Taco cruise into the truck. That will entail using the new brain box and acuator from the Taco, and some playing with the wiring to make it work. The original cruise brain actually has more pin-outs than the Taco one does.

I've been looking at what I can do with it, and I think it is do-able, but the big question mark I have right now is if the Taco brain box will be able to use the speedometer speed sensor on my truck (since the Taco had a speed sensor on the transfer case). Going by what I have gleened from both FSMs, I think it will work, but I'm far from sure. I do plan to make it so that I still use the controls on my steering wheel.

I would just use a new servo controlled Cruise control, and if you can, hook it to the buttons in the steering wheel. The factory units have too many parts in too many places. And transplanting a 2nd gen to 2nd gen from a junk yard would be nightmarish, compared to aftermarket. New steering column, etc.

Please stop! Nothing will work as good or last as long and be as reliable as the stocker. The reason it shifts down early is the cruise and engine ECU communicate when the cruise is on. By design, it will allow an early downshift and on a uphill grade, will even hold off on the upshift to make sure the load is off. If it didnt do this, the speed would vary too much and if the set speed and actual speed are 10 mph or more diffeence, the system will just unset.
