Yeah, then you can put a torch to the stud nuts (that sounds funny...doesn't it?) to get the manifolds off for cleaning up the heads. Unless, you can pull the whole stud out....which might wind up happening, anyway. Most of mine came out that way...the nuts were so frozen up.

How hard was it to break loose the manifold to exhaust nuts? Did you use anything in particular to help them along? (I found PB Blaster to be OUTSTANDING on temperamental exhaust nuts)...

I'm experimenting with colors; how'dya like them?!?

The PB Blaster is definitely the best IME. But, if they're really frozen up (rusted/welded together) then you'll probably have to apply it several times...which means a bit of a wait. However, WD-40 (was out of the PB), a good socket and brute force was all I used....and wherever I could get a cheater bar in. It's a tight spot, so I used extensions (1/2in) also. Taking the wheel off would help, too. As I recall, there were some angles all I could get on was a box wrench, so I doubled a couple up for leverage. God!!! That was one slow going part of the job! Have fun...try not to bust a nut (pun intended).

Request for Assistance:

I'm requesting opinions from EXPERIENCED (i.e., you've done this before & know what you're talking about) folks regarding decking, quench, etc., while I've got her apart. Please take a look at this thread & let me know what your opinion is regarding doing more than a simple HG replacement.

Thanx!

This is something new on me, but I just did some reading on it. Considering having some adjustments made? I guess I should say "serious" adjustments.

What will you have to do....machine the block down or lengthen the piston?

Well, got the heads pulled today. Here's a link to the all the pics so far:

http://www.putfile.com/tnrabbit/images/89906

And here's the short version...got the pulleys off the main shaft for pulling the oil pump later:

and took out MOST of the oil pan bolts. How the heck do you get the ones in back out?!?

had to use FOUR socket extensions & my torqure wrench to get these effers off:

this little sucker was hiding under a shroud under the intake manifold; you CANNOT get the heads off with manifold intact without pulling it and the following ones (10 mm, five in all):

and this one is hiding on the backside of the right head:

Right cylinder bank:

and Left cylinder bank:

See any evidence of blown headgasket here?

Or here?

Right bank head:

Left bank head, #2 cylinder:

No carbon buildup to really speak of:

And I'll be darned if I can see any evidence of a blown head gasket or obviously cracked head!!

Here's some pics of the #2 cylinder, cross hatching intact--woo hoo!

Does anyone see any reason why I would have coolant in the #2 cylinder? Maybe crack head up behind the valves/guides?? Any other ideas?

BTW; all the other cylinders looked like this; a little toasty?

Here's the culprit:

the dark, rusty looking spot on the HG. Everything else looks good.

I've sent an oil sample to Blackstone Labs; if it doesn't show any abnormal bearing wear, I'm going to stick with my original plan to change out both HGs, oil pump, & timing belt. If there are bearing issues, I'm going to go with the complete engnbldr rebuild. Wish me luck!

Big day! Got my Blackstone Labs report: They said there was some wear on the bearings & cylinders, probably caused by the antifreeze in the oil, but that the oil still had a good amount of wear protection in it (with 8500+ miles!). Looks like I can run my Mobil 1 for 10,000 miles if I change the filter @ 5k.

Ordered a spindle nut kit, clutch foot cover, and shifter bushing from MarlinCrawler.

Ordered a machinist's tool set from Sears: http://www.sears.com/sr/javasr/produ...seBVCookie=Yes

Ordered the Master Engine Kit from Ted @ engnbldr.com; he was extremely helpful, talking engine stuff with me for a good 15 minutes before I ordered the kit, PLUS they are having a SPRING SALE (!) so I got the entire kit delivered for only $378.00...WOO-HOO!! (a savings of $36.00)

Ted thought my increased compression readings were probably from the head being machined when the HGs were done in 1998 (before I bought the truck). No way to know for now.

I'm waiting on delivery of an engine hoist from Northern Tool on Friday. I'll have the engine out before I head for Puerto Rico on Sunday!

Did Ted say anything to the positive or negative about the higher compression? Will that affect future head gasket issues....

that machinest set looks nice --

Have you dropped your block and heads off at the machine shop yet? whats the word - I need all the info i can get here....

Ted said I'd have to ensure the machine shop double checks the decking for both heads & block to ensure too much hasn't been taken off. I was running super unleaded with no issues before. I'll be using Ted's 10.9 headbolts. I think most HG issues are from folks replacing them without having the head/block checked; Ted agreed with me on that.

Thanks--I can't wait--I love new toys! by the time I get finished, I'll have enough tools to open my own shade tree mechanic business! check the first pics of the air compressor I purchased from Northern Tool; I really got lucky there and bought it when they had FREE SHIPPING (it weighs 385 lbs!)...

I guess your ___ is bigger than mine - I mean your compressor blows more than mine - I mean...

I only have 5hp and 18 cfm at 90 psi -- and i thought i went overboard -

Nice compressor you have there though... What kind of impact are you using?

ummm.....oooookaaay....*must...control.....urge... ..to make sexual inuendo comments*

Most of my air tools are HD Campbell Hausfield; not the best, but I got them SuperCHEAP on eBay. I have a really nice Chicago Pneumatic air drill and a Craftsman Professional Air Grease Gun as well. *brag*

Well, I'll be coming back to MD from San Juan tomorrow! (yuck)

Some views of the airport & rain forest in the background:

And the beach:
