Crank pulley TDC notch incorrect?

Hello!

I just purchased my 86 4runner 22re and have put about 1500 miles on it. Runs pretty good.

started hearing the metal knocking noise and checked the timing chain guides and they are broken. so I'm currently replacing the timing chain.

I am getting ready to remove the crank pulley, and wanted to make sure everything was lined up correctly in TDC for the # 1 cylinder. But when I turned the crank pulley notch to TDC the # 1 piston is not all the way up. i put a screw driver in the spark plug hole. also the distributor rotor is at 9:00 position, and the exhaust rocker is loose but the intake rocker is somewhat loose not as much.

When I rotate the crank pulley about 1/4 full turn clockwise (Crank pulley TDC notch now at 3:00) the #1 piston is at TDC, the distributor rotor is at 11:00, and both rockers are loose. The camshaft gear pin is at 12:00.

I am thinking about using a file to make my own notch in the crank pulley where everything else is lined up TDC, taking it apart, new timing chain and putting it back together this way. it just doesn't make sense to me, the keyhole on the crank pulley can only fit on one way why it doesn't line up correctly.

I don't think I am overlooking anything but any advise or encouragement would be greatly appreciated before I go through with this. To me this seems like my only option.

Thanks in advance!

I'm getting ready to tear down my 22rte to do head/timing chain/cover etc. and I noticed before my head gasket blew that my harmonic balencer was sloppy. I tightened it down, but before I did I noticed that I could turn it a decent amount back and fourth by grabbing the balancer. When I tear it down I'm gonna be looking for a bad crank keyway and hope that the balancer and especially the crank aren't all worn out.

The notch on the balancer should just about line up with the keyway on the balancer, if it does not you need a new balancer. Making a new mark will work temporarily, but it's only going to move on you again.

I've seen this issue with the balancer at east twice on here within the past few months.

Here is one example: https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f115...-right-243169/

This is the way they should be lined up.

If they are aligned with each other then the timing chain either jumped or it wasn't installed properly to begin with.

Here is a photo of one that has shifted.
