Unhappy Cracked windshield

Hey guys first off let me tell the story on how the windshield got cracked. I was coming from the store with my dog sitting and didn't notice a kit running across the street but when I did stopped hard and my dogs head hit the windshield and cracked, keep in mind that I was only going 10 mph. Funny story was that my dog didn't seem to notice. hahaha . But anyways my question is do any of you guys know a website where I can get a cheap windshield replacement? I looked on rockauto and they are asking $200 for it! Or am I better off going to my local glass store? and also recommended sealant for because on rainy days water leaks through the top of the windshield.

Websites sound scary to me. Before I order, I'd be sure that if it shows up broken you get another windshield for free. $200 sounds reasonable. At our body shop, some trucks we get in the windshield costs over $1000 for just the glass. My windshield cost $165 from the local glass shop. I install it myself. While ordering your glass ask for a tube of primerless urethane and some pinchweld primer. For the best adhesion, remove all the paint on the vehicle where the urethane is going to go. Then use your pinch weld primer on the bare steel. Make a frit on the windshield using the same primer. Cut a v in the urethane nozzle and run an even bead on the glass. Get a careful friend and place it on the vehicle and lightly press it in place. You can shift it a bit but don't get too carried away. Use tape to hold it up. Check for leaks using low pressure water starting at the bottom. if it is leaking, pull the windshield out and start over from the beginning. Once its not leaking, crack open the window so when you close the door it doesn't build up pressure and pop your windshield out.

On another note. Your windshield is considered structural glass. If its installed wrong, and you roll your vehicle, it could fall out and your chances of death/injury greatly increase.

Your likely better off just having someone else do it. Then if it leaks bring it back to them and they'll remove the windshield and reinstall it and you won't have to risk breaking it doing so.

Probably local glass store. Depending on your insurance, they may replace it for free or cheaper. Your dog's head hitting it wouldn't crack it unless there was already some damage. The next rock probably would have done the same.

Had a rock fly into my windshield once in a construction zone on the highway. Ended up having it replaced in 30 min by a local glass shop for $125. Call around and compare prices though, one guy wanted almost $300 for the exact same thing.

I used www.safelite.com to replace my windshield. Came and did it at my house and it doesn' leak. It was $250 or so, if I remember correctly.

My local glass shop charges $120 for the glass and around $40 to install it. The windshield channel tend to have rust in them. I pull the windshield and clean the channel myself and save quite a bit over them repairing and cleaning out the rust. They sell a sealer the kills or covers the rust.

Thanks for all the response guys, so my best bet would be going to a local window store. Safelite quoted me $194.95 for new glass and new mouldings. My dog weighs in at about 80 pounds. I'll start calling around for the cheapest price.

I mean no offence, but safelite was the most expensive place when I checked. They do a quality job, but other shops do the same treatment with new moldings and such for less.

p.s. those factory moldings cause rust, you can use a rubber trim instead that won't cause rust. Our glass shop has rolls of different sizes in stock. Maybe inquire about it.
