Cracked Dash? What's your solution?

-Replacement? (very hard to find!)
-Covers that snap on? (Just don't seem to look good.. end up looking like pep boys aftermarket add on)

Well, I thought let me do some research on upholstering and what it would cost.

My dash is cracked, I'm about to replace my heater core so I want to use this as an opportunity to fix/change the dash.

I came across this
http://www.thehogring.com/2012/10/22...acuum-forming/

and a local shop that can do it..
http://www.justdashes.com/index.html

Anyone have any experience with this? I am going to call soon and ask about pricing, I'll update this thread for your information

Well, that option is no good for me.. apparently they deal with high dollar show cars and such.. quoted me $1500.

I searched this forum for other threads on dash covers and the various solutions.. I didn't find a satisfactory answer.

What did you do with your cracked and ugly dash?

Another place I'm inquiring right now is Fibrenew, they repair the existing. The guy asked for pictures for a quote. I'll update that here as well.

There was someone on here a while ago who fiberglassed over his entire dash, turned out pretty good.

Thinking along these lines, has anyone tried to just bondo the damaged locations and repaint that?

I haven't thought about bondo... Mine is currently crack free *knock on wood* and I'm just coating it in ArmorAll and being a general pain to anyone that dares touch my dash :

Idk, I just don't wanna risk it. There are a few spots I worry might be about to break through though...

303 Aerospace Protectant is much better than Armor All atprotecting plastic. If you ever get lax on the application of Armor All, thenit will cause your plastic to dry out (totally defeating the purpose). It doesn’t leave things greasy and artificiallyshiny.

As far as dash cracks, mine has one. I’ll probably just geta cover. They’re cheap…….

Old school car guys actually rub unscented baby oil into the dash and other plastics. Works rather well.

303 aerospace is a fantastic product. a little pricey here in newengland but well worth it. ive been using it on my boat interior for years. unfortunately it wont fix your crack.

i remember many years ago, it must have been in the late seventies, there was one of those "call in now" mail order comercials for this stuff that fixes all sorts of vinyl tears and cracks!

It showed applying some goop that was the same color of the vinyl to be repaired. Then there was some overlay sheet applied and a household iron would go over it a couple times and Wala! It was fixed!

They even had a demo of repairing a CRACKED DASH! Of course they made it look perfect!

Does anyone remember that? Remember what it was called? I was just a kid.

Bondo cracks and falls out... I used a general purpose filler from Lowes, so far it has held up pretty good. Although I did get one crack in the dash when I was reinstalling it. My dash was BAAADDDD. From what I learned the filler needs to be some what flexible.

I cut down my cracked area so it was less of a canyon, added layers of headliner foam to build it up, and then covered the whole thing

I went to JoAnns fabrics & picked up some black foam backed headliner material which is what you see in the pics. then after a few months, I noticed some fading, so I went back this fall and layed down a no-fade black on top.
Not car show quality, but a drastic improvement over what I had. When I do my door cards in the spring, I may do some tweeding & do the dash to match
