coolant in my oil - headgasket isnt blown..

Hi everyone im new to the forum and im really impressed with all the info im learning already, I just bought a 89 toyota pickup 4x4 with a 22re motor. Previous owner said the headgasket was blown again after a rebuild 5k miles ago. Well I pulled the head last night, headgasket is in good shape, no smoke when truck idles and does not overheat from running. I did some searching and im checking the head and timing chain cover tonight, - question is.. is there anything else it might be? The timing chain was tight and seemed to be in good shape last night. Any help is appriciated and thanks in advance. Ill post a few pics later

Just because a head gasket looks good dosen't mean it is...

Post up some pics and let us see. Timing chain cover is a good place to start checking...

could me any number of things. TC cover first. if there's any chain chew on the DS then that's probably it. onto the HG. if any of the pistons look nice and clean then you blew it. probably between 3 and 4, or 1 and 2. the block deck may look fine, but these engines develop low spots right between these cyls. barely enough to register, but it's there. pull it, deck it, rebuild it and be done with it. good luck out there.

if u know for sure head gasket is not blown then fissure is right the 22re is notorious for the timimg chain slapping the glides till they break off then it slaps the trimming cover wears deep gouges deep enuff to break thru the ports for the water pump

If you're familiar with "leak down" testing, that can differntiate between a head gasket, cracked head or block and the timing chain cover: a breach in the head gasket, head or block will let air pressure into the cooling system whereas a leak down test won't put air into the cooling system.

agree 100%. before i tore my engine apart i did a coolant leak down with about 15psi (fail) and a cylinder leak down up to 50psi (fail). would only hold 6psi at the radiator and pretty much 60%+ loss in each cylinder. needless to say i'm most of the way to returning a fresh engine back to my truck. you can drop some serious coin for these testing tools, but if you aren't going to use them everyday go get them from harbor freight or check the pawn shops. my buddy let me use his snap-on's which was very handy.

Finished pulling the timing chain cover tonight, it seemed to have some hairline cracks.. I couldn't tell if it was casting marks though. Bought a new one to be safe. The last person inside that motor didn't put the tcc gasket on properly, so water may have been getting in there. Crossing my fingers for now as im taking the head to the head shop here in va beach tomorrow. It looks to be brand new. But ill have it checked reguardless.. sorry no pics slipped my mind today. Anyway, the tcc had no "slap marks" from a previous chain on there. The old owner said the it had a rebuild 5000 miles ago, and the pistons had ".020" on them telling me its been bored before... hopefully all that's wrong is the gasket that shifted and/or the tcc had small cracks

nice vacuum leak ya got there It will not run right without the afm hooked up.You need this for the computer to give you fuel. run a meter on it ( refer to FSM) to check if it's good. if it's bad your truck will run like crap.

jthieman, did you find out what the problem was? FYI, I did a headgasket on my '83 celica gt. Was all proud of myself until I saw coolant in the oil!!! I KNOW the gasket was perfect when installed, shaved head, etc. Went down to my local auto store & got some type of head gasket repair liquid, as I remember the liquid turns into glass or something, a permanent repair. Fixed it, and that was 5 years ago! Told a gear head friend of mine about the situation. He open tracks his mustang but was talking to some other racers that were running the 22RE's and this is what was explained to me: the head bolts are so close to the cooling ports that they rust out, introducing cooling into the oil. He told me that all these guys did the same thing (used the head gasket fix). I'm sorry I don't recall the exact name of the product I used but I know there are a lot more of this type of product on the shelf than when I did it. Good luck!

hey billybob, how did you determine your cam timing was off? I have a problem w/ my 87 4runner; crappy power, 100 miles per tank of gas!, cat glowing cherry red AND if I try to put timing mark on stall and won't start. I bought the truck fall of '10 from some yahoo's that had done a head gasket so I am thinking that the cam is off. I only use it to plow a couple of properties of mine so these major issues aren't stopping me from using it but would like to correct it. Can this be done by just removing valve cover & cam sprocket? Already checked distributor, installed properly

i had 2 probs and both seem to be a result of cam timing one is it will run but when u mash the gas its " falls on its face" i was told thats a cam timing prob and mine as well it got so hot that i melted a plastic plug out of the frame and it had not been running but a few mins i ask a very good mech he said both problems point to cam timing allso since there was so long of a time laps between when i took head off and put motor back together know TDC the mark on cam was not strait north when i took it off i thought it was pointed a lil towards the driver seat turns out i saw in another post than his actaly pointed toward the passenger i still have to take vale cover off depress timing tensoner and move the cam gear one tooth i hope that will solve probs now ..OH and btw fissure333 u were absolotly right about the afm " air flow meter " as soon as i hook it up bam it ran Nice call
