I've been checking and tuning my 87 22r for a month now and finally did a compression test. Well I found my problem. #2 had 0 compression. And the spark plug has some carbon build up. So i'm assuming that I need to adjust the valves. Hopefully that will be all of it. Just curious if there is anything that I should watch out for while adjusting the valves??

not really. do a search if you want advice on it, theres a ton of threads.
you can also use it as an opportunity to check the condition of the timing chain.
remember to do it when its hot

Maybe it could be a bent valve but....? I am going to try and do it tomorrow. Getting cold outside and dark sooner! The timing chain..... what do i need to look for? And what is normal compression for the 22r? i have 150 in the three good cylinders. I can't wait to have 25% more power!! lol

no slack, guides all there, wear in the cover, condition of the chain etc.
it'll be more than 25% btw because the rest of the engine wont be dragging that cyl along
if its a bent valve this isnt gunna fix it. this will just fix the valve adjusters being too tight causing the valves to remain open when they're supposed to be closed

I'd be shocked if the problem is a valve out of adjustment...
But I've been wrong before...
If you go in and the intake valve is very loose and adjusting it doesn't help, it's either bent or has a chunk of carbon holding it open. Either way it will be time for a valve job.

good news. the #2 exaust valve had no clearance.
pretty fast job. not much to it! that really makes me like this truck. Now it has some power! I just thouht all toyotas dragged a$$. On to suspension and that exaust leak.

I bought the truck about a month ago. I've done a number of things. When I replaced the spark plugs and wires the #2 plug looked like a mutant! So I knew something was up. Thank God it wasn't a bent valve. Just a testament on how great these engins are. Three cylinders for who knows how long!
I adjusted the timing a little bit more then 0 degrees. Maybe around 6 btdc. Sounds and feels better. Now my question is that my other spark plugs were a little on the lean side. How do richen up a 22r just a bit?
