Comparison of 22RE vs. 3.0 V6 Release Bearing for my 1988 4Runner W/ Detailed Pics

How's it going everyone? I have been working hard on my 1988 4runner, SR5 with 5 speed and 22RE for some time now and Yotatech has been a huge help. Now it's my turn to pay it back just a little bit.

Release bearings or throwout bearings, hubs and clips for this era of truck have been a little confusing--even with help from this site. Well, I figured it out and what would have made it faster and easier are some pics. Since I have all of the parts in question and a sweat camera I figured I would post them and hopefully help someone in the future.

On the left you have the 3.0 V6 release bearing and it's retainer clip. On the right is the 22RE release bearing, with the Toyota release bearing hub pressed into it, and its rerainer clips. The 3.0 V6 bearing is sold as is--there are no parts to be pressed into a new bearing, just install it with the retainer clip and go. The 22RE bearing does require a Toyota hub. You have to remove the old bearing from the hub and then press on the new one. This is out of a 1988 4runner, but should apply to the trucks as well ranging from 1984 to 1992.



Below you can see the 22RE bearing that is sold as a bearing only--the shiny silver part at the bottom of the piece on the right. The black piece on top is the release hub that must be pressed into the bearing. This is a Toyota-only part that goes for around $25 at the dealer. P/N 31231-20090 . The clips are P/N 31232-22010 and cost around $2 each (you need 2 total). You might be able to locate the stuff cheaper online, I found mine at a Toyota junkyard for $10.

I had to find these parts because he V6 bearing came in my 22RE 4 cylinder truck. This can be very confusing because the release bearing that you get for the 22RE simply won't work in place of the V6 bearing unless you get the release hub or correct clips. I suspect the V6 bearing works fine in place of the 22RE bearing and hub as the overall depth is the same and the ears that ride on the clutch fork are the exact same distance from the front of the bearing on both units. I prefer the larger surface area of the bearing for the 22RE however (which you can see in the pic above).



Each bearing requires its own, specific clip(s). The V6 gets the single wire clip and the 22RE gets the two pinch clips--to the best of my knowledge they are not interchangable. Below is a pic of how the 22RE clips attach to the release hub and clutch fork. It has been said on this site that if you put them in backwards they will make a terrible noise and not work properly.




Well, that should about do it. I hope this helps someone. And any of the more knowledgable Toy' techs out there should feel free to chime in and comment or correct anything I have posted.

Do you have a picture of how the v6 bearing attaches to the fork? I don't know if my clip has gone bad or what, but it doesn't fit together in the way I would expect...

My 88 22re came with the orange bearing in it. It could of been swapped out with the wrong one over the years. I think Niachi is the one that Toyota uses that makes the orange bearing. I prefer the orange one myself.

The orange one tends to be alot more expensive then the solid silver bearing. In my experience, I have had less trouble with the orange one and it will last longer.

Seems like I have interchanged the bearings in a pinch one time. I could not get the Niachi bearing on a weekend and the silver bearing was availble at several places and instead of waiting, I just used the silver one and it worked. You are right that the collars are different.
